I remember being told that he died in about six hours, which would have been a very quick death for a crucifixion, which was normally a slow death over several days by suffocation and exhaustion. |

Crucifixion was an agonizing, torturous death, but Jesus endured a torture that was nearly as, or perhaps equally, excruciating before he ever got to the cross. This was the pain he suffered when he was scourged. Scourging, called verberatio by the Romans, was possibly the worst kind of flogging administered by ancient courts. While the Jews administered whippings in the synagogues for certain offenses, these were mild in comparison to scourging. Scourging was not normally a form of execution, but it certainly was brutal enough to be fatal in many cases. A person certainly could be beaten to death by the scourge if that was desired. This event is only recorded in one of the Gospels, if I remember correctly. One theory is that this was added (remember, the accounts of the death of Christ were written many years after he was killed) to stop talk that the resurrection did not truly happen. People were already speculating that Christ was not dead when his body was placed in the cave. |
None of those people was God in the flesh, who led a sinless life and who willingly let himself be put on the cross the bear that pain and humiliation, and who then raised themselves to life again, so that you can be reconciled to God despite all the sins you commit. Totally not the same thing. |

The Penitent Thief, also known as the Good Thief or the Thief on the Cross, is one of two unnamed persons mentioned in a version of the Crucifixion of Jesus in the New Testament. The Gospel of Luke describes one asking Jesus to "remember him" when Jesus will have "come into" his kingdom. The other, as the impenitent thief, asks Jesus why he cannot save himself.
Only the Gospel of Luke describes one of the thieves as penitent, and that gospel does not name him. For this reason, depictions of the crucifixion of Jesus often show Jesus' head inclined to his right, showing his acceptance of the Good Thief.
