I'm not sure that Roseanne's tweet about Valerie Jarrett is as racist as it appears to be

Look, I have said previously that I hate to say that but in light of the topic I kind of have to and I think she is attractive nontheless. Just like many people say SJP looks like a horse but she is still attractive. I have also said that the features that I believe make her look like that are not features that most would equate with African Americans. In fact, I don't think her features look particularly African American.

WTF does this mean? She looks good, even for a black person who looks white?

I can't even.

But in reading some comments online I noticed a number of people saying that they didn't even realize that Valerie Jarrett was African American. I looked up her picture and sure enough, imo she definitely appears more white than black and I can easily see how someone could assume that she is white. Also, and I hate to say this, but in light of the story I have to. Her facial features do have a similar look to the characters in Planet of the Apes - and NO those are not African American features that make her look that way, there's just something about her bone structure that resembles it. I do think it's possible that the Planet of the Apes remark could have been inspired by her appearance and not her race. And yes it is still an incredibly rude and ugly comment to make, but it may not have been made out of racism.

Nope, anyone who knows politics knows VJ is African-American. It was a racist statement, period. If Roseanne has fessed to it, then why bother to continue to try to justify it?

It's likely that Roseanne knew VJ is African-American otherwise we would have heard her say that she thought she was white, but the tweet still could have been inspired by her appearance and not her race. I personally don't think she really looks black.

Not only has Roseanne said that, her son provided texts that support her statement.

I posted this on the other thread about Roseanne. She did state that she thought VJ was white..... numerous times. The statement was still pretty horrendous. But, I think it does make a difference that she didn’t know she was of AA decent.

Doesn't matter. What matters is if Roseanne thought she was. It is very different comparing a white person to an ape than a black person, although both are of course terrible. I mean, liberals here compare the president of the US to an "orange turd," but we wouldn't have been able to compare Obama to a "constipated black turd."

And before you start in with "it's fake orange tan" stuff, it still is a stupid thing to criticize Trump about. It shows a fixation on color - natural or fake - by people who proclaim that color should be irrelevant.

Rationalizations by dumb people.

Not everyone knows who Valerie Jarrett is. But even assuming Roseanne Barr did know her race. She did not make the comment about a woman who really appears to be African American which makes me think that the inspiration for her comment could have been based on her non-African American looks which happen to be similar to the characters in the movie.

JHFC. Please slither back to the primordial ooze from which you emerged.

So in OP's mind, it is ok to call white people apes because that isn't racist?

jsteele wrote:This is very similar to DC Council Member Trayon White's defense about not knowing the Rothschilds were Jewish. It's the, "I'm not anti-Semitic/Racist, I'm stupid" defense. I believed it in White's case but have a harder time believing it in Roseanne's case. Though she certainly does have a strong argument for ignorance.

No surprise

What is no surprise? No surprise that he believed it in White's case but is less inclined to believe it in Roseane's case? White and Roseanne are both idiots, so I'd say if you are giving a pass to White for antisemtitc statements due to ignorance, you'd need to give the same pass to Roseanne's racist statement due to ignorance. Otherwise, it's a double standard.

It is amazing how anger makes people unable to think straight. My initial post clearly said that it was an incredibly rude and ugly comment to make.

It was a racist comment to make. Please stop with the revisionism. Stop.

What is so troubling about Trump and many of his supporters - Barr included - is that they do and say horrendous things and then there is a second wave of despicable behavior in the form of revisionism to rationalize the initial horrible behavior. Oddly the revisionist "story" is often just as troubling than the first and true story. This here is another example of that.

OP is fortunate that this is an anonymous website. If she were a public figure, she might get fired for this thread. Fortunately, she can say whatever she wants here with impunity. And she is.
