Middle school - a little over a mile. I used to drive DS part way in the a.m. since it was on my way to work and he wanted to get up as late as possible. DD prefers to walk because she likes having that time with her friends.

High school - just under a mile

1.2 miles each way. He walks as long as weather isn't gross.

All three schools are within half a mile to our house.

My kids have been walking 0.9 miles to school both ways since 1st grade, about 75% of the time (a neighbor or I will drive them if the weather is really bad, or sometimes just to give them some extra time). Sometimes they bike instead.

In middle school, I walked to school almost 2 miles every day - meeting my best friend on the way. I could have hitched a ride with my mom, who was dropping off a sibling, but I preferred it.

They currently bike or walk 3/4 mile to their FCPS elementary school. Next year, they will bike 1.5 miles to their middle school.

My 3rd grader walks a couple of blocks, but the school is in the neighborhood.

I think for HS, MCPS provides busses only if you are more than 2 miles from school (which is crazy in the rain, snow, dark of winter mornings, etc). Not sure about distances for ES or MS.

Our kids walked l/biked 3 blocks for ES (starting in 3rd grade on own), bus for MS, and walk 1/2 mile to HS.

Almost a mile for high school. She bikes sometimes, but drives since 11th grade.

My 3rd grader walks exactly a mile. I walk with him to get my steps in. My 12yr old (middle school) bikes 2 miles to school (we have bus service, but he prefers to sleep in and bike). I do not drive him or manage that peocess-he is 12! Is your child special needs?

My 13 yo MSer walks 0.9 miles to school each way - about 20 minutes. For HS, he will walk just under 2 miles to school each way - no bus offered. He will likely ride his bike to HS

Our elementary and middle school were both 2-3 blocks away. My daughter starts high school and it is a little over a mile. Great exercise!
