Ours is about 1/3 mile away. We've always walked it with our kids. Now that our older kid is at a charter middle school 4 miles away, our younger kid walks it alone with a friend.
1/2 mile
13 yo DS walks 0.5 miles from the school bus stop to home. DH drops him off at the bus stop in the morning, mostly because it is on his way but its also means we don't have to worry about him missing the bus.

4th grader walks .5 miles to and from school. She meets two friends one block from our house, so she doesn't walk alone. They have been walking together on their own since 3rd grade; before that, we had a bigger group with one adult walking along. We only drive if the weather is absolutely terrible on the days that they have to bring their instruments to school.
7th grader walks .3 miles to and from the bus stop. She meets a friend about 3/4 of the way there, so walks mostly alone. Both kids only walk in the neighborhood, no major streets to cross. |
.3 miles
4 yo^^. We obviously walk with her.
We are about a mile from our Elem school. We are a " no walking" school because of a busy main road ( 198 in Moco) We walk about twice a week though at least one way. I like DD getting exercise before the school day begins
1.5 miles for a 14 year old boy sounds perfectly reasonable.
1.2 mi according to MCPS. She doesn’t take the same route every day. It depends on what friends she wants to hang out with or even the weather. Overall, it’s been good for her. She dropped some puppy fat and started running small errands for the family.

Elementary school is 1/2 mile from our house. Middle school is about 3/4 mile away.
The high school is a drive/bus ride away, maybe 3 or 4 miles. But that’s years in the future. |
My 14-year old's bus drops here 1.25 miles away. I usually pick her up but if I'm hung up at work or need to be picking up another sibling at the same time, I'll have her walk home. I drive her to the bus stop in the morning as it's an early start so I prefer she have that extra time to sleep.
Es was .6 miles, but involved crossing a busy road, so bus. HS is .8 miles, or a 15 min walk
My 11 year old twins walk 1.1 miles
Walking it is .85 miles. I drive her to school mostly because she is a slow poke in the mornings, and also because there’s five minutes are really nice for us. She is in fourth grade and just started walking home alone this year. She is the only one in her class who walks home, and I know at least 50% of the kids in the left closer than we do. She is very proud of herself for being able to walk
15 year old boy walks 1 mile each way, rain, sun, snow, sleet, he could ride a bike but preffers walking. We aren't home in the morning and are amazed that he makes himself breakfast, and is able to make it every day. Pretty congested traffic area. Proud of him.
