LJMS did well on this list!
I really hope they don’t start forcing AAP kids in the Madison pyramid to go to Thoreau instead - there are always rumors about that but does anyone know if it’s on the table? |

We are moving home to Virginia in summer 2020 after living overseas primarily in SE Asia for 7.5 years with my husband’s job (DC based financial NGO).
Looking for some input about Coopers AAP Our son has been in British International schools since he began school. He scores in the top %s worldwide for British school students his grade in math and science and English (not trying to boast just giving history- as international schools vary it’s helpful to have a statistic for all students worldwide taking British exams to clarify that his schools have been very good) But we know moving home to a large public school after a somewhat sheltered experience at international schools will be a big change He should qualify for AAP Cooper being small appeals to us as it might help him adjust better than Longfellow being large. How is Coopers AAP now He will be in grade 8 September 2020. What is the highest level of math offered at Cooper? He’d love to apply to TJ because he’s hardwired for math and science and really enjoys those classes the most |
| I see postings about numbers accepted and wonder if a Cooper parent can respond about experience as Numbers might be skewed just due to moving kids over |
| This thread is about LAST YEAR. It is not the data on the most recent admissions. |
| The highest math offered at Cooper is Algebra 2. The unofficial number of students admitted into TJ this year is 37. Might be a couple more after the summer round. |
They used to when I was a kid at Thoreau. 90% of the school was in the Madison pyramid, but they didn't have the AAP nonsense back then. |
| This year Cooper MS sent about 37 to TJ, 75 some to private schools and the rest to public HSs mainly Langley HS. Their team placed 1st and 2nd in VA in Math competitions, Science Olympiad, Robotics, quiz bowl, Scholastics, and many more. Their band was the only MS band chosen in VA to attend a national band festival in IN this year. We’re pretty impressed with one Science teacher and one Math teacher. They built the love of STEM in kids. Parent involvement and volunteering is huge. |
Hmm. https://www.fcps.edu/news/longfellow-middle-tjhsst-repeat-virginia-science-olympiad-champions |
If you actually read the article, it says Cooper was second in Science Olympiad, which is what the original poster stated. So nothing fishy about this article. Hmmm? |
DP The original poster stated :"Their team placed 1st and 2nd in VA in Math competitions, Science Olympiad..." It seems to me that the original poster implied that Copper finished 1st ... |
|
I know of two kids who turned down TJ for Langley from Cooper.
Langley was a better fit. |
Not at all. I interpreted it to mean 1st in the math competition, and 2nd in Science Olympiad. One being the former and one being the latter. You seriously think this was fishy?! |
Oh come on! Do you have to be so petty? This is why people are not willing to share info on DCUM. |
| Your son doesn’t need AAP for 8th grade. Just take honors courses and you will be set for high school honors and AP classes. Good luck . |
It sure is nice to have in elementary school! |
