That's insane.

They can fantasize about redistricting 1700 students, or twice that. But it's not going to actually happen.

I really think Lee is just going to lose accreditation and FCPS will just shrug and deal with it. The redistricting proposals were horrible, they make Annandale another Lee in 5-10 years, bring down Hayfield which is already average, and make WS extremely overcrowded even with the expansion. Meanwhile Edison gets another AAP center (SEES), and South County gets Saratoga which it should probably have already, given its proximity.

I really hope you’re right. West Springfield families should NOT be moved to Lee. It simply wouldn’t be fair when we paid a premium to be in the West Springfield pyramid. We deserve the schools we paid for. Those in the Lee pyramid knew what they were getting when they moved there (or at least they should have).

I don’t think they’d do that even if Lee is under-enrolled. The WS boundaries are pretty compact. If anything FCPS will move even more kids out of Lee, like they already moved neighborhoods out of Annandale and to Woodson or LB. There’s no good solutions.

You deserve a school in FCPS, but it doesn’t necessarily get to be West Springfield. FCPS shouldn’t let Lee lose accreditation just so your house can appreciate more. Lee students deserve a quality education, which they can’t get when the School Board turns a blind eye to a school that is edging ever closer to the precipice.

But they didn't all pay the premium. Daventry was at Lee just a few years ago. Even some of Hunt Valley was at Lee. The families remaining at Lee, some who have been here a long time, have seen FCPS dismantle it piece by piece, pupil placement by pupil placement - Lee has been screwed every way you look at it. And you want to talk about fair? Why do you think West Springfield is special and must be protected? Because you paid more for your house? It certainly isn't supposed to work that way. The elitism on this board never ceases to amaze me.

Accreditation standards have changed this year. A student who makes a certain amount of improvement on state tests (even if they don't actually pass with >400) counts as a pass for the school. We were briefed on the changes last week. Expectation is that "pass" rates will improve pretty significantly for heavily ESOL schools like Lee.

Didn't those hunt valley neighborhoods rezone like over a decade ago? 14 years?

At some point you really need to stop complaining that "they rezoned a hunt valley neighborhood to WS"

That rezoning is not a current issue.

Another reason WS don't want to redistrict. Older students in ESOL.
If school board can moved the older students to an alternative school then making Lee an IB magnet and neighborhood school should address the potential accreditation issue as result of low SOL scores from older ESOL students this year. Gatehouse poster said this is the first year these students are required to take SOL.

"I don't want to say to much for fear of losing my job but I am an ESOL teacher at Lee High School. There are tons of 20 year old males at this school that are in freshman classes such as World History 1, Biology and World History 1. To me this is an issue that has been ignored despite teacher protests.

This is an age issue, not an immigration issue. In my level 3 ESOL class I have freshman who were level 2 ESOL last year but I also have 20 year olds. 14 year old girls should never be in a class with 20 year old men. In my ESOL classes I have seen 19 year old men dating 14 year olds. Nothing is ever done about it. My voice has been ignored for years but FCPS has been doing this for years within ESOL classes, but they are now spreading outside ESOL as well. The only way your daughter will not have 20 year old men in their class is if they take honors classes as a previous FCPS teacher already stated'

20 year old men should be required to switch to Bryant high school.

They paid more of a premium than anywhere else in the Lee pyramid because those neighborhoods didn’t have to put up with Key MS or any of the terrible ES feeders in the Lee pyramid. Regardless, anyone else in the Lee pyramid who has bought in the past 20+ years has essentially received a huge discount because of the reputation of the pyramid. They knew what they were getting. Don’t come crying to West Springfield telling us we need to be re-zoned to your poor schools because you now have regrets.

Cry me a river. There are no guarantees in life. Many people were in the Lee pyramid long before it tanked. It used to be a decent school in the not-so-distant past. Do Lee parents “deserve” to suffer? Check your privilege, lady.

None of the people with kids in school currently fall into the category of people who were in the Lee pyramid before it tanked.

All of the students currently in that pyramid were born after Lee started to go downhill.

Maybe current students were born after the pyramid started tanking, but many of their parents lived in the Lee HS district when it was much better. It was never in the league of McLean , but certainly much better than it is now.

I think you're saying that the Lee area has only long time residents, that nobody buys the houses that are increasing in value in the area. This is obviously untrue.

Of course people are moving into the Lee pyramid to be close to good jobs at NGA, Fort Belvoir, etc. They are educated professionals who expect good neighborhood schools. In addition to the newcomers who are attracted to the Springfield area for their jobs, there are many people who have lived here for years, who grew up here and remember when the schools were decent. To say “you get what you pay for” is morally reprehensible.

As between West Springfield residents thinking they were guaranteed to remain in that high school district and Lee residents thinking FCPS was committed to maintaining quality at each of its high schools, the Lee residents have the far stronger argument.
