I think Virginia state law prohibits charging public school students for transportation. |
Mine as well. Days that I drove DD, she walked in by herself. At ATS, parents aren't allowed to walk their child into the building, unless there's a good reason (helping them carry in a project, supplies for an event, etc.) |
As has previously been stated, OP is almost certainly eligible for bus service, based on her location- not a 'special need.' But she doesn't want to but Larla on the bus, she wants to walk. |
So I don't think people understand that this is the BACK ENTRANCE OF THE SCHOOL. Once you go up the stairs, you have to walk all the way around the school to get to an entrance that isn't locked. At ASFS you aren't allowed into the school either at drop off or pick up, but you also don't drop them off effectively a block away and expect them to get there ok. Maybe for an older kid, but for a kindergartner of course someone would walk them to where an adult would be able to observe them entering the building. Very few people use the back stairs right now, but if a lot of people started to, they would likely need to start putting patrols on that side of the building so kids don't get lost on their way in. |
OP states in the beginning that she is in the walk zone. |
no she doesn't. She states that she is in the Clarendon/Lyon Village neighborhood, and she bought it for its walkability. Looking at a current walkzone map, those neighborhoods would not be in the walk zone. |
| OP here: to be clear, we’re renting not owners and my pro-walkability comment was re the neighborhood as a whole not the school in particular. Once I’m over my pregnancy pelvic pain/waddle I’m sure we’ll experiment with walking up to the school ourselves, but reading about the stairs and so forth was making me worry that I had miscalculated my plans for the fall. I appreciate everyone who has replied with helpful information! |
| I believe we are in planning unit 2409. |
Look at the map- in terms of ASFS, you are neither in the current walk zone or the potential expanded walk zone. This means you will get bus service. |
| And the bus is fantastic! Both of my kids took bus starting first day of kindergarten. Great experience that gives kids a sense of responsibility. |
| Recently experimented with the walk up 14th to Lincoln with a Vista—do not recommend! 14th is super steep for a heavy stroller, plus no sidewalk on one side for much of the way. Also doesn’t seem like cars can see you coming when they are coming over the top of the hill, heading toward Kirkwood. I also found Kirkwood hard to navigate w a big stroller. Lots of people park across the sidewalk. +1 to the folks who suggested wearing baby for the walk. |
Buses are great! The younger kids especially like them, and the older kids who are patrols enjoy being role models for the younger kids. Not an ASFS family, but there is no reason not to use a bus if it's offered to you. Much better than an unsafe walk! |
Relentlessly unfunny. |
Really I was proud of Parkour Immersion, spoilsport. |
