Sheer hosiery is back in style

You can always use leg color like Laura Mercier or a self-tanner on legs instead of hose.

But aren't your legs FREEZING in the winter?

That's when you wear tights and tall boots. I wouldn't wear a navy skirt suit in the winter because tights look campy with navy if you're not doing a biz casual look without the jacket. If I have to be formal, I wear a pants suit to avoid the issue. Otherwise, brown opaque tights with tall brown boots, black tights (opaque, or more sheer with ribbing, dots, whatever) with tall boots with black outfits. You can wear a black skirt suit in the winter with tall boots: Condoleeza Rice. Just PLEASE keep the distance between the top of your boot and the bottom of the skirt to less than 3 inches, 2 is better. And, I never, ever, wear nude hose. It is old lady.

FWIW -- I work in a job that takes me from the Hill to lawfirms to meetings with CEOs. When in doubt, I wear pants.

It is uncomfortable and unflattering.

Side note: I almost choked when one poster said she was more comfortable in hose. I really, truly do not understand how that could be . . . oh well.

I have really narrow hips and ample thighs (no I'm not fat, but that's the way my body is), so i get a little thigh rubbing action and hose is much more comfortable for me than bare legs.

Remember, it was the SATC gals who first wore bare legs in the winter. Lots of people did say bare legs in winter was ridiculous.

I'd wear pants on the really cold days and bare legs on warmer ones. This is harder for those taking mass trans. but for those of you who go garage to garage, it's easy to pull off.

If you don't wear hose with business suits or business dresses, what do you wear? bare legs? I am talking about your standard navy blue classic cut business suit.

And please don't say tights bc I have seen that look at it's terrible.

I wear bare legs. I shave, exfoliate, moisturize, and use self-tanner.

that sounds like way more work than just pulling on a pair of stockings.

As for the poster with the cookie addiction - you, too, can have your cookies and eat them, too! Three words: Spanx bicycle shorts.

Not sure DC is quite that alone. I travel all the time for work and find that some cities, especially in the midwest, are much more conservative than DC when it comes to business attire.

I do think it has something to do with the type of work you do and the image you need. I work in a male dominated industry and find that I need to dress on the formal side, including stockings. For better or worse clothing affects people's view of how professional you are.

I do that anyway, even if I'm wearing tights (less the self-tanner part).

I'd rather do that than look Old Lady.

This is right on. I used to live and work there and I cannot imagine going to work without hosiery while wearing a skirt.

OP here. I was talking about non-business wear. Sheer hosiery is back in style for weekend wear, like tights were for the past couple of years. I am absolutely shocked by this.

Business wear is a whole different ball game. There are definitely times when you have to wear hose, period, I understand this. But I prefer to go without whenever I can. When I do have to wear them, I always try to go as sheer as I can.

I thought OP was discussing sheer vs. opaque, not sheer vs. bare.

What kind of leg makeup do people use? Never seen it, but I'm interested.

Laura Mercier does a fab one. Takes 30 seconds to do both legs. Smells like coconut.

As for wearing hosiery for casual wear - I'd rather be beaten with a cactus than wear them!

I have a cute, less formal suit that is maroon and pink (with a little cream) tweed. Knee length skirt with slit. Should I be wearing cream colored opaque tights, maroon tights, or nude sheer hose??

Anonymous
If I were you, I'd wear the cream opaques. Preferably wool tights if it's cold enough.

8:53 - What is the suit fabric? Is it an actual tweed suit? How heavy or light will also be a factor in how sheer or opaque the hosiery.
