Interesting thread here.
So....in the winter, if I wear a skirt, it's tacky to wear hose? I had no idea. Is this just another way to make me go out and buy loads of new suits, so I have pants to wear all winter long? |
Lol. Save your money. Office cultures differ. And I have a feeling the OP doesn't even work in an office and was referring to wearing hosiery in general as a style thing. In my office and line of work, sure you can get away with not wearing hosiery, but I wouldn't, even in the summer. But I would never wear bare legs in the winter, for my own comfort and for professionalism. |
| I love black tights - I find them so much more flattering. I only wear pants to work in the warm weather, and in the winter I have a long black skirt I wear with boots and tights and a couple of knee length skirts with tights. |
| If I am going in to the office and don't have meetings I can get away with a skirt and tights, or pants. But if I am meeting with clients, which is the majority of the time, I have to wear suits. Some are pant suits but I am actually finding that things are getting more formal rather than less and that I am wearing more skirt suits. Stockings are a must, sometimes even in the summer. And agree with staying away from suntan, although it is hard to find really neutral colors sometimes. |
| I have to wear hosiery to work with skirts. I have found a couple of brands that have a great "suntan" color that is not to dark and has no sparkle to it and they are very thin. (On of the good brands is cheap too, so I stock up). The effect of very very thin non-sparkle tan hosiery is that it is very flattering and smooths out your legs without being noticable. I'm sure women notice it more, but guys LOVE the way they look. A lot of guys think they are weird or gross in theory but good hosiery should be undetectable. My DH thinks seeing the top part is gross and like seeing the curtain pulled back on the wizard of oz. But he loves what they do for my legs. His analogy when he sees me in them without a skirt on, "Ew. I don't want to see the meat factory, I just want to eat the burger." |
I do the same. I have all sorts of different black tights - some with ribbing (for my pleasure - kidding :wink or other small imbedded prints, really opaque, etc.

Well, I'm a lawyer too and haven't worn hosiery for years. And, I don't see it around much either on other female attorneys.
It is uncomfortable and unflattering. Side note: I almost choked when one poster said she was more comfortable in hose. I really, truly do not understand how that could be . . . oh well. |
|
Hate to mention it but DC is the only major city in this country where hosiery in the office is still pretty much de rigeur in tradtional biz environments.
You can always use leg color like Laura Mercier or a self-tanner on legs instead of hose. As for the poster with the cookie addiction - you, too, can have your cookies and eat them, too! Three words: Spanx bicycle shorts. |
Another lawyer here, no way I wear hose. Charla Krupp (How Not to Look Old) advises against pantyhose as they look "old lady." http://www.more.com/5600/4203-nude-pantyhose-debate |
| If you have to wear hose, the best will be a sheer black hose (to wear with black) or Donna Karan's The Nudes. She has a shade to work with most skintones and it looks like a polished bare leg. |

A couple questions...
If you don't wear hose with business suits or business dresses, what do you wear? bare legs? I am talking about your standard navy blue classic cut business suit. And please don't say tights bc I have seen that look at it's terrible. |
pp here. I'm way ahead of you there. I have the bike shorts, the footless leggings AND the hose all in multiple colors. To quote Steel Magnolias *I havent gone out of the house without Lycra on these legs since I was 14!* |

21:33 - What sort of biz do you do? That will depend upon what you can wear to the office.
In general, with the navy suit, I'd do the Donna Karan nude hosiery. With a dress, I'd do a bare leg. Just wore one today and used a little "leg makeup" to even color and make the leg look polished. If I had to wear hosiery, I would go for a "bare leg" look. Just make sure the legs match the color of the face, arms and neck. |
I wear bare legs. I shave, exfoliate, moisturize, and use self-tanner. |

I think ultra-sheer hose in a nude/natural shade gives most women that little bit of extra oomph in their appearance.
Unless you're wearing strappy sandals, then a bare leg is the way to go. If wearing hose makes you crazy, try a larger size. The ones I wear are supposed to fit a woman who weighs 100 pounds more than I do. Sounds absurd, but I don't think they're uncomfortable at all. I just wish they were cheaper. |
