If teachers strike nationally, could they bring the NRA to its knees?

The Women's March organizers announced a nationwide school walkout on March 14 at 10 a.m. (local). They're operating under #Enough. I don't know if Facebook pages can be linked here, but will try: https://www.facebook.com/events/1767175080245694/

I'd start thinking of at least some kind of back up childcare for late April-whenever. But I suspect it won't take that long. I give legislators a week before they cave. Teachers have mega power if we use it right. Now is the time to use it and this is the right thing to use it for. April 20th.

You're not going to get all teachers to agree to this. No way.

In the past we haven't even been able to get a substantial number of county (Fairfax) teachers to participate in a "work to the rule" work action.

I'm not familiar with work actions or the rule you're talking about, but a quick google search tells me that they were trying to make sure that no teacher did more than the bare minimum. If that's what you're referring to, then that pretty much sucks, and I can see why teachers (and for sure parents) didn't support it. Trying to achieve a safe(r) working environment for teachers AND school environment for kids by doing the following has nothing to do with getting teachers to do the bare minimum at work - it's about ensuring that teachers ARE ABLE to do that minimum (or whatever they choose to do) without being mowed down by bullets:

- banning all semi-automatic weapons
- making sure that everyone conducts training and has a background check (no psychological concerns) before being permitted for a firearm
- introducing high taxes on both firearms and ammunition, that is earmarked for public safety mitigation (lockdown equipment, first responder services, hospital costs for gun-related shootings, public training, etc)
- having a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for non-permitted firearms and/or use by people other than those authorized to use them. not sure yet what the consequences should be, but they should be significant enough to be a strong deterrent.

It's a good thing you don't live in a state where teachers strike over benefits and salary.

Are they going to arrest them all? Or fire them all?

They could. I'm a teacher in VA and I sure as heck will be showing up to work if my colleagues strike. A strike is not going to do a bit of good. It will just give teachers in pro-union states a free vacation. Those states tend to already be in favor of gun control. You won't change conservative states' minds on this by going on strike in liberal states.

Hahahah thanks for the laugh.

Please go ahead

I think a strike is the opposite of what is needed.

I think that teachers can teach kids that the gun culture that families have is akin to mass murders. That if you vote for the NRA, you vote for killing kids. And they can teach our kids that, without ever getting fired-- because teachers are smart and they have very powerful unions.

So, for every drill, they can say as long as we have people that own guns in this area, we have to be careful. We have to be careful because guns can be in the hands of the wrong people, and we have to protect ourselves. And even good people can turn to bad people, because sometimes life is out of control. And when those good people turn into bad people, and have guns, we can't tell the difference between the two and that's why we have to have drills, because the bad people have guns and want to hurt as many people as possible.

I think that if every teacher starts teaching that, teaches the shame of gun culture, we may have a chance.

Why doesn't VA have a teacher's union?

I don't want my kid's teachers to strike. He's a senior and has five AP exams to prepare for.

And I don't think it will make one bit of difference if they strike. It's not going to make our so-called representatives care.

And if they did, would anyone notice? From my dip into the Montgomery County schools a teachers' strike would bring improvement.

Please not this group again. Enough with the vaginas - it's become a laughingstock.

We do have them, we just can't collectively bargain. Membership is not required. State law also prohibits public employee strikes.

Thankfully the Right to Work status did not become part of the state constitution last year.

The NRA will never care. But congress might.

I'm not OP, but my idea would be that the teachers would continue to do childcare in the classrooms but refuse to actually teach. Since an uneducated population affects everyone (not just parents and students), theoretically the government should care about it. Was that what you had in mind, OP?

That is a terrible idea. The whole point of the strike would have to be that teaching has become too dangerous and they’re striking for safer working conditions. It’s a little hard argue that when you’re sitting in the school with your students.

An effective strike would be that no teacher shows up for that period of time. I'm sure all the DCUM posters would be fine with that outcome, since it's for an incredibly worthy, emotional cause.

I'm an educator and do not own a gun. You seriously think it's okay for teachers to teach their values at school? I assume you'll think it's okay if we teach the shame of abortions that end potential lives of their little sisters and brothers?

Ugh. No.

I was all for it until this post. This is important and shouldn’t be tainted by such a divisive group.
