Give me a break. It's ridiculous to cancel every time there is a flurry. Driving in an inch or two of snow--even if roads are not "cleared"--is not unsafe!!

And SAHMs of elementary kids need to get a clue. Once you have kids in MS/HS, you'll appreciate how disruptive these cancellations are.

So, where are these dangerous road conditions?

We are south of Brighton Dam.

My husband said New Hampshire was a mess when he left at 6:30. Our neighborhood roads haven't been cleared either.

Maybe the Sun God likes you b/c you are special . . .

Apparently the first bit of snow melted and then froze so there is a lot of patchy ice under the snow. I was surprised as well, but I do not envy the people that need to make these difficult safety decisions each time it snows.

This would explain it, I guess—unexpected ice, plus that bus going off the road last week, probably has them worried.

I predict this thread will reach at least 6 pages complaining how the county is too big and they go to school in the snow in Nizhny-Novgorod so why doesn’t MCPS. And so the world turns. Glad it’s not my responsibility to make these decisions.

So, in other words, recency bias.

That's why. Highways are fine, school buses drive on neighborhood street. If you haven't walked outside yet and feel that some spots are slippery.

I understand that you need to get to work. I hate missing so much work too but I guess there were some buses that went out and realized it was not good enough to drive in.

Our aftercare is open all day so I don’t care about work. I care about my child actually learning.

Thank you! I'm the one that asked about this above. What grade are your kids in? I'm so glad you get the all day aftercare. Working parents shouldn't have to stress. My kids are in lower grades so I'm not too concerned about them falling behind.

But what changed in one hour??

What did they announce a DELAY first and then change their mind??

THAT is what I find ridiculous. Talk about last minute. If they wanted to close (which I do NOT think is necessary), they should have said that to begin with.

Ridiculous.

Two hours. Presumably they started getting ready for the start with a two-hour delay and found that conditions were worse than they had thought.

Exactly. It wasn’t until they got out and saw what the roads were like (worse).

Maybe we can stop the thread since we know it is going to be a repeat of all the other threads concerning closing school during poor weather.

We get it. You are shocked and horrified. You have to work. Where you come from is so much better. Does this cover all the complainers?

You forgot:

-The roads where I live are fine.
-The school district is too big, how come my child has to stay home from school just because the roads elsewhere in the county are bad?
-(new for this year) They're just did this to stick it to Hogan.

Aww, I’m impressed that you two PPs must never complain about anything since you’re so condescending to the other parents who express a different opinion than yours.

Glad you are so special and love MCPS , but please get off your high horse. If you don’t like that parents are complaining, then move on to another thread.

Urgent Update: Due to unsafe road conditions affecting school transportation, Montgomery County Public Schools is now closing schools today, January 17, 2018. Administrative offices are open on time. Day care programs in school buildings may remain open as scheduled.

My kid starts K next year. Does this mean before/aftercare would be open? Rachel Carson ES.

Depends on who provides aftercare at your school. Bar-t is open today. I think bar-t's schedule is based on what MCPS says about admin offices. If admin offices are open, then bar-t is allowed to be in the schools and is usually open.

I believe that is how KAH operates as well. When administrative offices are open that means the school buildings are open and the after care provider can provide services.

Huh? Snow days are a godsend for MS and HS kids. And they can take care of themselves!

Well, I drove to work from Olney to DC in my puny Honda Civic and it was fine. Took me about 10 minutes longer than usual but that’s it.

A full day closure was not necessary, IMO. Thankfully KAH is fantastic about being open and the kids like it.

What does this mean for spring break?

Yup. I'm expecting mine to stay in bed until noon. At some point in the afternoon they'll start trying to get a head start on their upcoming homework.

Thank you MCPS.

We will continue to have odd weather patterns because we have fucked up our planet so much, but I digress. Jan and Feb tend to be colder than Nov and Dec.

MCPS needs to factor this in when they make the school calendar. We need school year to be expanded, shorten the summer break, open schools in August, and understand that the schools will have to close when unsafe weather conditions exist.

My children are beyond happy that school is closed. They will probably sleep in till 10 or 11 am. It is wonderful!!

School is not daycare. People are complaining because they are inconvenienced, not because their students are not learning.

+1. My high school kids can catch up on sleep, homework, and relax for a day. All of this without missing instruction. My kids benefit from the occasional snow day. I was less happy with snow days when they were younger. No work for parents, the kids wanted entertained all day, and whining.
