Cars are skidding. It is not the snow, it's the icy conditions on the side roads.

Are you guys REALLLLY upset about school being out or because you have to make alternate arrangements so that you can get into work? Serious question to ask yourselves. For my part, not too concerned about a snow day, but I do think employers should be much more flexible.

Maybe we can stop the thread since we know it is going to be a repeat of all the other threads concerning closing school during poor weather.

We get it. You are shocked and horrified. You have to work. Where you come from is so much better. Does this cover all the complainers?

Okay, I was in the camp that this is a tough job and it’s a big county and it can be tough to make a decision.

But what changed in one hour??

What did they announce a DELAY first and then change their mind??

THAT is what I find ridiculous. Talk about last minute. If they wanted to close (which I do NOT think is necessary), they should have said that to begin with.

Ridiculous.

It wasn't too bad in Germantown, but my office parking lot hadn't been treated and a little gas send me sliding sideways in Gaithersburg.

That's why. Highways are fine, school buses drive on neighborhood street. If you haven't walked outside yet and feel that some spots are slippery.

I understand that you need to get to work. I hate missing so much work too but I guess there were some buses that went out and realized it was not good enough to drive in.

Our aftercare is open all day so I don’t care about work. I care about my child actually learning.

Urgent Update: Due to unsafe road conditions affecting school transportation, Montgomery County Public Schools is now closing schools today, January 17, 2018. Administrative offices are open on time. Day care programs in school buildings may remain open as scheduled.

My kid starts K next year. Does this mean before/aftercare would be open? Rachel Carson ES.

Our before and aftercare program through KAH at FLora Singer opened on time and will be open all day (7am - 630pm).

Anonymous wrote:My husband drove to VA this morning and said the roads were pretty icy until he got down 66 a little. Apparently the first bit of snow melted and then froze so there is a lot of patchy ice under the snow. I was surprised as well, but I do not envy the people that need to make these difficult safety decisions each time it snows.

This would explain it, I guess—unexpected ice, plus that bus going off the road last week, probably has them worried.

I predict this thread will reach at least 6 pages complaining how the county is too big and they go to school in the snow in Nizhny-Novgorod so why doesn’t MCPS. And so the world turns. Glad it’s not my responsibility to make these decisions.

You forgot:

-The roads where I live are fine.
-The school district is too big, how come my child has to stay home from school just because the roads elsewhere in the county are bad?
-(new for this year) They're just did this to stick it to Hogan.

We live in Brookeville near the border of Olney, which is close to upper MoCo, and our streets are clear and dry. We live on a cul de sac, so it's not like we live on a major road.

So, where are these dangerous road conditions?

Some aftercare providers open on snow days and some do not.

Two hours. Presumably they started getting ready for the start with a two-hour delay and found that conditions were worse than they had thought.
