Navy Federal Credit Union and Thoreau Middle School

OP ~ it's a difference from when I grew up and maybe you, and from what I also thought was acceptable practices. I cringe at the idea of corporate sponsorships, just cringe. It is accepted as ordinary in some parts of the country, some political leaning areas, and much more accepted than in past decades. Most disturbing is the number of people who don't give it any thought at all and can't fathom a counter argument.

Funny that your reaction is to “cringe, just cringe” and are “disturbed” by others who don’t see the cringeworthyness of a credit union/neighbor talking about probably saving money or compound interest or interest rates. What is the scary cringy counter argument? That our 13 yr olds might want to open a bank accountant? That aside, chances are that if those kids are not currently NFCU members, they won’t qualify to open an account at NFCU anyway. I think you need to check your knee jerk reaction.

Yes, I think it comes down to how important you feel that there be a separation of education and kids from business promotion/marketing during school hours. NFCU is doing great things, but at the end of the day they are there to promote their business, however benevolently they may be doing it. Having an assembly dedicated to them is crossing the line in my opinion, or at the very least cringe inducing as you said. I see that they buy teachers lunch and pay for some of their continuing education activities, so its starting to muddy the waters and get into some grey areas.

I think the staff at Thoreau is well liked and maybe that's why some are sensitive to a little criticism and the first reaction is defensive.

Also, just to be clear, the assembly wasn't about financial literacy or anything educational. It was to promote the NFCU and Thoreau partnership and to talk about the things NFCU does for Thoreau students.

Most of these kids wouldn't be eligible for Navy Federal anyway, so it's not like Navy Federal would be getting much business from this presentation. Most people who are eligible for NFCU are already aware and are happy to have the opportunity to join.

If anything, NFCU is being community-minded in sending an employee to give this presentation to the school knowing full well that they are unlikely to get new customers from it.

My 8th grader said she didn't have an assembly but there may have been one when she was in 7th grade. She couldn't remember what it was about.

That said, NFCU was recognized for being the 2017 Business Partner of the YEAR for all of FCPS.

OP.... time to shut up.

Many of us don't think this is good at all. Not good that there exists a list.

Yet neither of you has articulated a rational reason for your cringe-filled hate.

Leave it to a few crazies on DCUM to find fault in a private-public partnership that benefits kids and reduces the burden on the public school system.

Lay off NFCU. I used to work for them. Their Corp office is located 1/2 mike from the school. They only allow military for the most part to become members. The employees volunteer to tutor, mentor, and become pen pals to the ESoL students and low income students. My team of 25 raised about $500cash and bought winter coats, movie tickets, Ugg boots, Lego sets, Nintendo DS games, as gifts for our “adopted” Thoreau family of 4 a couple of Xmas ago . (Those are the gifts that stood out to me, as i was also helping to wrap them.)

The chorus gives a concert during lunch one day for the employees. The art class puts their work on display, a judged (not sure if for cash or non-monetary award).

They also give lots of money to the school. I would love it if my kids school had a corporate sponsor as generous. (Our PTA and booster club are always asking us parents).

I wish more companies would do this.

NFCU will do a great account for the kids, with no fees and a great interest rate. What's your problem - work for some other bank?

NFCUNION is the only place that has been responsible and proactive about catching fraudulent use of my credit card. The big private corporations that issue cards first gave away my personal info by phone and then denied there was fraud when I deleted them.

I’ll tske NFCU any day. They serve their members, they are not out to bleed you for corporate profits. When I was a kid, a private bank let kids open accounts through school and bank bank at school weekly. Even that probably helped more kids than not. OP, your school is lucky. It’s not like it’s Coke or Pepsi.

OP and the other haters are probably upset because it’s NAVY and DCUM loves to hate on the military.

Credit unions exist to serve their members and are owned by their members. One of their missions is educating members. They are nonprofit. I'd take this any day of the week, and definitely well before Bank of America coming into my kids class. I am all for financial education!
