Navy Federal Credit Union and Thoreau Middle School

I think you pick people to teach kids based on their qualifications, not based on if they wrote you a check. And the assembly’s purpose still isn’t clear to me, so I’m wondering if anyone else knows what it was about.

Private businesses supporting the school is great. But I’m confused about an assembly during school hours for a private business to promote themselves to kids. That doesn’t seem like an appropriate use of school time.

I’m open to an explanation though if anyone has one.

Not exactly. Safeway is a for-profit concern. NFCU is not.

When I was in 8th grade, we had a private financial advisor come in once a week to my Social Studies class and talk about stock investments. We played the game where we picked a couple, and checked their prices over a semester.

If he was looking to market his advisory services to us for an annual percentage of our assets, I think he was barking up the wrong tree. But it wasn't like that.

Get a real problem, OP. You're a nut job.

OMG. My kid said a DENTIST came in and talked at a school assembly and even passed out goody bags! (Toothbrush & toothpaste but still)

just trying to drum up business, I'm sure.

I bet the little bag holding the toothbrushes and toothpaste had the name and phone number of that particular dentist on it! Call the police.

Firefighters came in to our kids' preschool. Totally inappropriate. Probably just trying to get them to start fires at home to drum up business.

My kid told me there was an assembly and they all got lollipops. No details about the actual assembly. I remember having stupid assemblies in school all the time, times haven't change much.

I bet those lollipops were a ploy by the dentist (who will probably be coming to your school next year) to create more business!

Waiting for someone to next equate a NFCU assembly with a visit from the Pope...

This wasn't what OP was complaining about, but it does represent just one part of what NFCU does for Thoreau families and the school community:

"Project Neighbors is an annual holiday event where our business partner, Navy Federal Credit Union, adopts Thoreau families for the holidays. Everything from household items to computers and bikes are given as gifts. It is truly unbelievable to be in the room when the employees are filling the staging area with gifts for delivery. Thoreau Student Services enjoys the opportunity to help behind the scenes with this endeavor. This year, 46 Thoreau families were adopted and able to benefit from this generosity. We are incredibly lucky to have this partnership with NFCU."

All schools should be so lucky.

It’s called COMMUNITY SERVICE. Thank you NFCU.

It’s great they give to the school and community. Can we not have them use up school time? Or is that part of the deal?

Our kids’ school has a regular assembly in the schedule. Monday or Friday afternoon, maybe once a month. Some call it ENRICHMENT. Or, gasp, ENTERTAINMENT.

OP, is everything with your type about drumming up drama and nonsense? there are real problems to worry about at Thoreau.

Can you please elaborate? My children may be going to this middle school and I would rather focus on learning about the real problems.

OP, almost all the schools I know of have corporate sponsors. I think Navy Federal Credit Union is a pretty benign corporate Sponsor for a middle school.
