I looked up city-data for several zipcodes for Silver Spring, Takoma Park and Olney because I thought my neighborhood was pretty gay friendly, and I was right!, this is all from city data. Takoma Park is actually the winner at Lesbian couples 1.0%, but that is pretty unaffordable
But Silver Spring, 20901 which has several affordable areas is the next most gay friendly at 0.9% Olney is not at bad as I thought, but 20901 is very gay -friendly. We live in the Forest Knolls ES school district which includes South Four Corners, Northwood-Four Corners and Forest Knolls neighborhoods. I would not look at Burnt Mills (20901) as the schools as not as good as other neighborhoods. Other neighborhoods are probably the same. So if gay friendly important to you, we welcome you in 4 Corners, 20901, Look for the bigger houses in Forest Knolls Neighborhood, and Northwood. | NP here. What about Rockville and Derwood? Anyone have insight about this? Are they better or worse than Olney as far as lesbian and gay households? |

As a gay person with a gay family, I can't think of anywhere in the DC metro region I would feel outright uncomfortable living in. Maybe some of the very rural areas are still backwards with their thinking, but anywhere built up is going to be filled with professionals and lots of transplants and unlikely to be a problem for you IMHO. I have faced discrimination one time in my life because of my sexuality, and it was in the District - just some food for thought. Most of my gay friends are in the District, Hyattsville, and Fairfax. This topic doesn't really come up in conversation among us so I think it's mostly not an issue, but curious to hear if others have different experiences.
Remember, even if you encounter a hostile person, that doesn't mean the entire city is hostile to you. It just means there's an ignorant person living there, and there are ignorant people everywhere. Case in point: what I experienced in the District, one of the most pro-LGTBTQ places in the country. It can happen anywhere. |
Gay couple with kids who lives in 20905 and were not the only ones. So while I’m sure the percentage is small, it’s not 0.0. |
| Gay or lesbian couples I know in silver spring send kids to private. |
For comparison... Silver Spring Likely homosexual households (counted as self-reported same-sex unmarried-partner households) Lesbian couples: 0.8% of all households Gay men: 0.7% of all households Read more: http://www.city-data.com/city/Silver-Spring-Maryland.html#ixzz526eUIgmH |
Our neighbors are lesbian, they send their children to local public Silver Spring schools (20901). Although I know a lesbian couple who live in the Silver Spring (Cloverly) 20905, they send their child to private school. All parents are happy with their choices. |
There is a high LGBT population in downtown hyattsville & mount rainier. The mayor of College Park, MD is gay as is a city council member. |
There are tons of lesbian families in our 20910 public, and more starting every year as the gayby boom rolls onward. |
+ md + dc and even then the majority of the population is still heterosexual so extrapolate from that what you will |
Really? Which SS high schools are better than Sherwood? |
| I live in Olney and find it to be more diverse than what others are saying here. Just look at the stats for Olney ES, Sherwood ES, Brooke Grove ES, Farquhar MS, etc. I really think a gay or lesbian couple would do fine here, although there may not be many others in the same living situation. I do know of one family unit that is gay and while I have not discussed it with them personally, they do appear yo be accepted and integrated here as well as their children. |
Do you really mean better? Or do you mean whiter?
|
Great intel! |
+1 This is my general perception as well, unfortunately. |
