Olney — LGBT friendly or no?

Sounds like most of the lovely people in MoCo...the land of grumpiness.

OMG, a lot of white people. Run away.

It may have changed, but Olney was pretty homogenous when I was looking to buy a home 8 years ago.

It really hasn't. It was like that 20 years ago when we move to near Olney.

Yes. Very.

Is this an endorsement? Can you say more?

Bascially we are a male/female couple who is involutarily childless and decided not to move to Olney because it's so family oriented we thought we would not fit in. We bought in outer Silver Spring and we do have gay couples in our neighborhood.

Sometimes people there seem very traditional, but I have not seen any discrimination.

Olney is where silver spring folks move when they start talking about schools that are too "diverse". Probably not hostile but definitely not friendly.

Funny, most of my gay friends are white and members of a church. Maybe it's because I'm gay, white, and part of a church.

Olney isn't going to be any different culturally from Silver Spring and its environs. You'll be fine.

Olney is much whiter than SS or TP. Some people move from SS or TP because they what whiter schools, or don't like living in a diverse neighborhood. Some of them more to Anne Arundel County or Howard County.

I think the OP should really consider neighborhood as the most important thing when looking for a house because your children are going to possibly grow up with no one else in their neighborhood or school in a family that looks like yours. I'd find out the number of registered Republicans and Democrats in Olney to tell you what the politics are like of your potential neighbors.

I know one lesbian family in Stonegate in Silver Spring, which is pretty far out and houses are bigger.

I think you are right. I find it funny given Olney schools are not any better than schools in SS area.

From City Data, I'm highlighting the pertinent point and giving you the link

Likely homosexual households (counted as self-reported same-sex unmarried-partner households)
Lesbian couples: 0.3% of all households
Gay men: 0.1% of all households

Idk if asking a bunch of (presumably) straight ppl is the best way to go about this. Just like I wouldn't ask white ppl about discrimination, well I might but their word wouldn't be final. They may just not see it bc it doesn't affect them directly.

It's also a draw for cheaper land and ''community feel", e.g. Olney Days, etc.

city data for silver Spring, which may just include 20910 and part of 20901
% lesbian couples 0.08
% gay men 0.07

Better than olney, didn't include all of silver spring

I know 1 family living in Onley, I would not call them LBGT friendly. Sorry OP. But, perhaps others are.

As an FYI, I’m sorry you still have to ask such questions.

Why do you presume that? This is DC.
