Why not?
You don't know what scents that person likes or if they have allergies. I would prefer a gift card to the store so I can choose my own products.

...and craft and stationary stores

Micheal's
A.C. Moore
Target
Hobby Lobby
JoAnn's Fabric

Target isn't a craft store...they have everything!

What about Barnes and Noble? That's one of my go-tos.

I have a bit of a stockpile. I'll trade!
Which is another great idea. How about a holiday gift card exchange with staff in January? Almost like a Yankee swap.

Also teachers get SO MUCH of this stuff. Even if they loved Bath and Body Works nobody can use all of the stuff they get if they have a big class.

Did not say that it was.

Okay, so what Do you NOT like about Target gift cards and what do you prefer instead?

This are all dos, not don'ts. Don't include cheap boxes of candy. If it is an expensive chocolate great but those Whitman boxes are come off as an afterthought. Just give me a gift card to CVS or whatever drugstore you picked it up from instead.

Maybe I’m paranoid but I throw out homemade food. I have no idea how clean someone else’s kitchen is, if they let cats walk on their counters, etc

Not only this but those of us who work with kids know how dirty their hands usually are (we definitely ask them to wash or sanitize regularly at school!) so it can make us a little queasy when a student brings a gift of homemade food and proudly proclaims that they made it or helped make it themselves!

Cookies bake in an oven at 350-400 degrees. It's not like that the germs from one licked finger, which was hopefully washed anyway, are going to survive. Lots of things in life to worry about, but this is not one of them.

Is candy from a local chocolate shop a good idea? I'm thinking most people have at least one family member who would eat it?

Also, a lot of us can’t wear scent to school due to allergic students.

They get regermed when they are cool and packaged by those little unwashed hands.

It’s really the fudge, divinity, and other softish candy that will make you ill. Though my whole family got sick after the cranberry pepper jam last year. 4 people, one bathroom. DD calls it the Poopocalypse.

Candy/cookies are tough. I love them, but I struggle with my weight. I give them all to DH to take to work. That said, I appreciate the intent.

Easy tell for if Starbucks is a good idea— ask you kid if the teacher brings in Starbucks cups in the mornings.

Yeah, after reading the threads on here for a few years, I have kind of given up. I feel like it's too little to do a $10 for a main teacher but I have too many people to give to and can't do $25 pp. I do give when there's a classroom collection but that's a whole 'nother thread.

Baked goods are stacked in the teachers room this time of years..alot gets tossed. But it is the thought that counts and teachers do appreciate that.
