I don't think that point is in dispute. Yes, we also have Medicare, too. But pretty much all advanced democracies have 100% health coverage. And for those who do have coverage, no one ever has to worry that they will be denied coverage when they need it most.

Why must people reach the absolute lowest depths before they can qualify for help?

Do you want to lose absolutely everything--your job, your home; see your children in poverty--so you can qualify for Medicaid? I don't, and I sure as hell don't think anyone else should, either.
