Anyone decide to go gray?

I have a tool that only colors the roots so the the rest of the hair doesn't get darker. My hair looks natural and doesn't have that "colored" look to it, and I don't have a perm or have it straightened. I think the flat iron damages my hair more than the color, the color makes my hair soft. I also get it trimmed every 6 weeks to keep the ends from looking frizzy.

I've seen young woman who bare their gray and they look older to me, but hey, everyone is different.

That's what you think. There is no hair dye that looks natural. But since almost everyone does it, at least you blend in.

I can usually spot a dye job on a man easier than on a woman. Mens' dyes all seem fake and mismatched.

I'm 31 and I like my natural color. I have a touch of bright silver all through my medium-chestnut hair. It's long and full of body, like supermodel hair. The silver adds shine that makes me distinctive. In fact, people have asked me where I get my highlights done!

I think some younger women (30- and 40-somethings) look absolutely fabulous with gray hair. Gray /silver hair framing a younger face provides a striking contrast. I personally don't think I could pull it off; I have a few grays and they are definitely more yellowy than pure grey/silver.

Do you not watch TV or movies? You really think Catherine Zeta Jones has that amazing deep brown hair naturally? I'm sure she has pleanty of grey and I'm sure it is dyed.

What looks unatural is when you try to deviate too much from your natural hair color or put in highlights to MAKE it look unatural.

The only thing unatural about a good dye job is that your hair can look so amazing that something so beautiful could not possibly be natural, see Christi Brinkley.

Are you changing your natural color more than two shades? Have you tried going a little darker to see if that would help?

Totally agree. Late 30s is a bit early (in my opinion) to go gray. I think that you might regret it later. There has to be a better place for you to go that can help you reverse the damage done. Try Elizabeth Arden, I get my hair done at the place in Tysons, and they are great. Expensive, but to me this is worth the money.

OP here...thanks for all the input! This is making me wonder about my colorist...could this be a result of the dyes she's using, or her technique? Is is possible this wouldn't have happened if I had used a better colorist? I've been going to her for the past four years or so.

OP: If you want to try someone new, I highly recommend Camille at Bogart Salon in Georgetown (Wisconsin Ave, just south of M St.) She's terrific with color and very nice and easy to work with. Also, not as insanely expensive as some other salons in town. Phone number is 202-333-6550
