Anyone decide to go gray?

Anonymous
NO F__KING WAY! I'd rather go bald I started graying around 28, and was completely gray by the age of 37, my dad prematured gray. I work hard at not showing those pesky gray hairs! I have a tool that only colors the roots so the the rest of the hair doesn't get darker. My hair looks natural and doesn't have that "colored" look to it, and I don't have a perm or have it straightened. I think the flat iron damages my hair more than the color, the color makes my hair soft. I also get it trimmed every 6 weeks to keep the ends from looking frizzy.

I've seen young woman who bare their gray and they look older to me, but hey, everyone is different.

Are you changing your natural color more than two shades? Have you tried going a little darker to see if that would help?

Totally agree. Late 30s is a bit early (in my opinion) to go gray. I think that you might regret it later. There has to be a better place for you to go that can help you reverse the damage done. Try Elizabeth Arden, I get my hair done at the place in Tysons, and they are great. Expensive, but to me this is worth the money.

OP here...thanks for all the input! This is making me wonder about my colorist...could this be a result of the dyes she's using, or her technique? Is is possible this wouldn't have happened if I had used a better colorist? I've been going to her for the past four years or so.

the gray is not totally covered so we get that highlighted look to the gray hair.

I use henna -- the pure stuff, no metallic salts that can make your hair turn green. I love it for many reasons:

* it costs a fraction of going to the salon
* I can retouch my roots on MY schedule
* it does cover my grey well -- my greys looks like red highlights and the rest of my hair just gets a reddish rinse look
* I was able to continue to color my hair throughout my pregnancies

What is the tool to use that only covers the roots? Thanks.

Roots Only...they have a website. Back in the day, I'd use a pick to part my hair, squirt the color and so on. It would take up to 40 minutes! Now it takes me, maybe, 10. It's cheap and it works. In the beginning, go slow and don't go heavy with squirting. I hold up a clump of hair, use the tool, brush the roots for even coverage, and go to the next clump.

I've gone grey , starting at 19...it's a look I like, but I get lots of flack for it, from coworkers and even family

My gray hair started getting attention when I was 26. People wouldn't listen to me when I spoke to them because they were staring at my gray hair, then asking me how old I was. So I finally gave in and colored it. Man, I instantly loved it. I look a lot better without gray. I think I'll let it go gray when I'm in my 60s.

I think you will look old. Why not just go dark to cover the damage and color the roots when you need to? All by a professional no at home jobs.

when I first read the thread title, I thought it said Anyone else decide to gay?

Late 30s is too young to go gray? Seriously? I thought late 30s was normal! LOL!

I'm 39 and pregnant, so I'm not doing anything to my hair. I have a few gray hairs. I'm on the fence about dying/highlighting. Have you ever seen those Joy Fit Club before/after photos (I think on msnbc.com - can't remember)? I think many of the women look terrible in the "after" photos - unnatural somehow. Maybe the stylists used the wrong color. I don't know. But I also think women who are close to 40 can look good with gray hair, depending on what color gray they have.

If your hair is damaged, try changing stylists and using a gentler form of dye, or go au natural and see what your gray looks like. Maybe you can use a combination of low-lights (gentler than bleach) that will off-set the gray and make it look like highlights?

PP here. I went from getting my hair highlighted every 6-8 weeks to totally natural (I did it using low-lights). While I sometimes think I *should* get highlights (because that what hairdressers tell you you NEED), I actually like my natural hair color, and obviously it goes well with my skin tone. I think that's partly why I'm hesitant to get rid of the gray. This highlighting/lowlighting is all a vast right- and left-wing conspiracy to spend money at the hairdresser's!

Wait - not Joy Fit Club - I meant Makeover Ambush.

How old are you now? Is it gray or white?

It can be quite striking, especially with a pixie cut. But long and gray is witchy!

I'm with you, I too started to go grey at 28, I'm now 32, but it is not too much that a box can't fix.

However, I have a friend who is totally grey, I would almost say she has white hair. I have no idea how old she is, but I'm dying to know. Her skin looks young, but at first glance you might put her at 50+. I'm thinking she has not hit 40 yet. It would not suprise me if someone has asked her if she is a proud grandma. She has a pretty face and is in good shape, but the hair is just awful and she even has this "cute pixi" cut posters are describing. It is not cute, it looks like old lady hair. If it were anything, but grey it would be cute.
