I knew someone would say that. You're right, I meant any NP but the Peace Prize. And in science, given the large number of potential winners, there have been controversies too, for example in the Medicine prize for the discovery of the HIV virus. Ultimately the prize went to the right person, though. |

Econ and physics NP still a bit political.
Go U of Chicago! |

Selection of winners that is.
Ok jet lag almost over, signing off of dcum. Sayonara. |
Most of the people on Political forum are busy worshipping poseur billionaires. |
| Just remember who is working hard, making decisions under uncertainty constantly, putting their own money at risk, and paying taxes so academics can toil away on long term projects, while teaching the same materials Every. Single. Year. |

I’m not even the same poster that person was replying too. Why do so many people think they are having one on one conversations on DCUM, it’s baffling. I just felt compelled to point out how irrelevant it is that they are from Sweden...And no, it still doesn’t make a difference just because you said so. |
+2 My husband is a PhD and research scientist/professor. Prestigious and has tremendous cache; does not pay well. |
Your investment in the conversation suggests otherwise. Suuure you're not the same person.

Oh Finland, Finland, Finland: the place where I quite long to be. Your mountains so lofty! Your treetops so tall!
Finland! Finland! Finland! Finland has it all! |

Yes, it has. People there are not judged by the location of their children's birthday party.
"We only celebrate" at Edgemoor" people will probably not know the difference between Berlin and Bern |
| I could care less about small homogenous countries in cold, dark climates. Great vacations, but to compare education system to a diverse country's like America sure won't win any awards in any circles. |
The problem isn't the diversity, although that's a common cry among bigots the world over. The problem is that we don't actually care about reducing child poverty meaningfully in the US, while it's a priority in every other rich country. Just look at how many ugly people on this forum argue against universal healthcare, living wages, and paid maternity leave. These things are directly tied to child poverty rates, but we want nothing of them as long as there's the tiny chance of becoming a billionaire. But stay in your shell. It's nice and warm under that bridge, I'm sure.

If there's one thing you can rely on at DCUM, it's complete ignorance of how functional educational and socioeconomic societies work beyond our borders.
