Hogan's calendar and the above-normal winter forecast

It's also counter productive. Paying for additional childcare makes my vacation budget smaller, not somehow magically larger. And families with teens often have to stay in town for sports, pre-tryout camps, etc.

I had no opinion on Hogan before all this, but I would never vote for him now. He just seems so out of touch with the reality of working families with his "just go the beach!" nonsense.

The summer is mandated to be two weeks longer, not one. All school days (including snow make up days) must take place before June 15.

Exactly. It's not just the later start date. It's the issue that school has to end earlier too.

Have you checked the forecast?

You really need to unclench.

One week doesn't make a difference
A few snow days and whatever result of waivers doesn't make a difference
Spring Break shortened or not doesn't make a difference.
Your kids missing a few days of school if you book a vacation doesn't make a difference.

There are much bigger problems in this world. It is summer and you are worried about click bait snow forecasts 5 months away?

Sit back and drink a Margarita. Live a little more. Stress a little less.

You must not have any high school days where unexcused absences make a difference.

And how about the football season which now begins before school starts...

I don't know why people are worried about Spring break. The calendar is set up so that we would have to miss more than 6 days of school to before dipping into spring break makeup. That's pretty unlikely.

On the 3rd snow day we make up on June 13, then snow day 4, 5 can be made up on the June dates. 5 snow days is a full week off school, which seems to be our worst case scenario.

In exchange, I can enjoy the last 2 weeks of summer in a MD beach house that costs less because these last 2 weeks are part of the shoulder season. And beaches are way less crowded. Loving this new schedule.

In my home country the students have shorter summer breaks, one week around All Saints Day, two weeks at Christmas, one week in February and two weeks at Easter. It's so much better: students can go on skiing vacations or just relax instead of building up tension throughout the school year then getting brain drain in summer.

How I wish the school systems around here would implement something like this...

I'm a teacher. I'd support this.

I'm a parent and support this, too. It would prevent summer brain drain, as well.

So cute that you already forgot the "Blizzard of '16" that obliterated snow dates.

We missed 6 days of school in 2016. That year snow fell heavily in January, and if something similar happened we would be able to use the 6th snow day in late January in addition to the 5 days I already mentioned above.

Only if we had 7 or more days of snow, and the bulk of those days came in February or March, would we break into the Spring break snow days. Principals have discretion to allow days to be excused for a variety of reasons, and I have no doubt tbey would not fail students who missed spring break makeup days.

So, personally, I think you are all Henny Pennys who are shouting the sky is falling.

Where do you see the order in which the snow days will be used?

You sound like that vapid wife of the Treasury Secretary who tried to bully that woman, calling her comments cute and adorable.

You are patronizing PP, and should be ashamed of yourself.

Debate on DCUM has devolved now to the point that shaming is a socially acceptable replacement for a rebuttal with actual facts.

I don't see an order - only for the first make up day which would be June 13. The rest says:

School Contingency Calendar, 2017–2018

If the school year should be disrupted by emergencies and schools are closed three or more days, the first make-up day will be used on June 13, 2018. Other dates in 2018 identified as possible make-up days include: January 26, March 26, March 27, June 14, and June 15.
