I hate how religious America is

Hey OP, how would you rate your own morals? From your post here you're clearly a bigot with a potty mouth and an anger management problem.

Care to elaborate on why you're such a hateful person yourself?

Care to elaborate on how you feel qualified to bash religion when you clearly know nothing of the subtleties and differences among religious groups?

Do you think you're better than the Christians and possibly others you indiscriminately despise? Tell us why!

Do you think the country would be better if ignorant, bigotted drama queens like you were running it? Tell us why!

Op here. I'll respond to your exasperated diatribe. Essentially in the last two weeks the latest news to come out is that third in charge at the Vatican has been accused of molesting children, and then this happened. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/the-times/police-raid-gay-orgy-at-cardinals-vatican-apartment/news-story/54f2b2825bf1f12b523b246b23bed5e4

From my perch as someone spiritual, but not religious, and extremely skeptical of organized religions based on books written by goat herders living in the desert thousands of years ago, it should moreso be you explaining to me why you subscribe to dogmatic, repressive ideologies. I "understand" all about the subtle differences in organized religions, they are not beautiful. A lot of them boil down to men controlling women, guilt and repressing gays.

Yup, you just don't want to see all the tolerant religious groups right under your nose. As a PP said, many synagogues and churches welcome gays and immigrants, if you'd just open your eyes to it. Many are serving as sanctuaries. Many religious people do more good works through their houses of worship than you probably do. In this era of conservative politics, we need these religious groups. Meanwhile secular institutions like Penn State have their own child abuse scandals.

I feel sorry for you, because you have such selective vision. In many places that's the very definition of bigotry.

"Spiritual but not religious" is total bs. I say this as an agnostic.

Get off your "perch" or high horse, and stop being such a bigoted jerk. You give atheists a bad name.

A lot of charities in Africa led by Evangelicals foment the killing of gays over there with the spreading of their extreme anti-gay message. It's in the papes, bro, read about it.

I'm with you OP, but since I live in DC I also don't know too many religious people like another poster or at least they don't talk about religion around me. Religion is not overwhelming here to make a thread.
People have however asked what religion I was, but have never asked if I was nothing. Strange.

You're just as bad as the fundamentalists with a close mind like that. Anyway, who cares. Organized religion has had ages to "normalize" itself. The bulk of millennials don't care about it though.

OP, America is progressive enough, why don't you go to Saudi Arabia and spread your message there?

Religion, with all my respect, is a control mechanism. It's not really influential in America, and that assumes both negative and positive factors.
But majorly religious countries have nothing to give to the world. Look at the ME, what is their input to the world development - science, progressive technologies, medicine, etc? Zero. Religion makes them useless dead weight.

Everything in moderation)))

How is religion "not influential" in America? The country is rabidly religious. Evangelicals delivered Trump the White House and he's paying them back by pretending to be a Christian and writing toothless religious freedom executive orders and promoting Jerry Falwel Jr. to a committee on higher education. We have rednecks in Tennessee trying to "teach the controversy in public schools. We have state legislatures tying to put the Ten Commandments on public land. We have Evangelical neocons trying to instigate war with Iran because their strange fascination with Israel (God favors them, and the reasons related to the rapture) and we have missionaries all over the world spreading a message of hatred for gays and contraception in places with AIDS. So yes, religion is pretty ingrained in this place. Puritan culture never left. It definitely f*cked up Native American and Hawaiian culture that's for sure. Anyway, some idiot from a mega church in Reston or some cozy, insular suburb will probably respond to this and say "you have no idea about religion! There are subtle differences!" Honestly, organized religion is a bunch of fairy tales.

Sorry ^^ you still sound like a racist bigot. Please go to another country if you can't appreciate the freedoms we have here.

It affects how we treat gay people, how we process science and climate change, how guilty we should feel about ourselves, and it also suppresses human nature and healthy sexuality. So that's it. I wish people could look past the fairytales about burning bushes, talking snakes, stoning gays, and the like and understand that you can still be a good, moral person without this stuff.

Yes, OP, go to Canda! You'll fit in just right. yuk yuk. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Canada

Canada is lovely, yes. And there are countless atheists and agnostics who are good, moral people. That said, of course (1) much of what we deem "good" and "moral" is derived from our religious foundations, commandments, and beatitudes, and (2) one not need believe in God to also believe in the fundamental goodness of Judeo-Christian moral teachings.

But as for the rest of your ignorant post, let's just say I will pray for your well-being.
