getting the bikini area waxed

(near my work) I had to be up in Bethesda for something else and was due. I made an appointment at a spa in Downtown Bethesda. I found out that it is Maryland law that they cannot wax the inner labia. At least that is what the waxer told me. If you are going all the way, you definitely want this part done too. (at least with respect to the sensations) This is just a warning for all of you. I hadn't had a wax in MD before.

Were they BSing me or is this true? I'm happy at the Sugar House, but I can't always get there and I would like to have a second place. I won't be choosing one in MD if that is the case.

Maybe the tech didn't know what the inner labia is--because hair don't grow there! Now on the inside of the outer labia. . .

In the end less expensive and a real savings of time, too. Less painful than waxing. Three 10-minute sessions is all it took for me.

Did you do the WHOLE area? How much was it?

To the OP - having to make frog legs is nothing. the BEST waxers have you get on all fours and stick your bottom up to get the hairs on your, ah-hum, "underneath parts". Its a lot less painful because the skin is stretched so taut. Taut skin is the key to a fast, efficient and less painful wax. I have been waxing for 20 years, since college, and have had it done at lots of different establishments. I do currently get it done at my nail salon but bu one woman only and she does an excellent job. I stuck with the high end places until I was comfortable with the whole process and knew what to ask for and what was acceptable v. unacceptable. Also, I do keep intact a "landing strip" or "baseball ticket" (as my husband calls it) of hair and always have. Personally, I just like the neat and clean aspect more than anything. I consider it an important part of personal grooming, unrelated to sexual activities, and certainly not a gross mutilation. My husband naturally has no back or chest hair and only nominal groin area hair. I am actually the hairier one (which actually makes little sense as I am "nordic" in looks and in antecedents) and I am just not keen on body hair. Interestingly, I have no hair (noticible anyway) on my upper lip but the pubic area will grow wild and full if I let it go. I always assumed such hairness went hand-in-hand but nope, not at all.

Do you have a recommendation of a spa that does the all fours thing for the best waxes?

Skin Beauty Lounge on Capitol Hill. They are the best in DC at brazilians, in my opinion, and it's a beautiful, clean salon with awesome aestheticians. I can't recall if all the aestheticians use the all-fours approach....I think you could always ask them to do it that way, to be sure. I went there for years, but then switched to laser treatment 2 years ago and never looked back. If you get to the point where you know you like the hairless look (or w/ landing strip), I highly recommend laser treatment. It's all done after 3-6 treatments (depending on your hair type), and you can stop going for monthly waxes. All you need to do after lasering is go in for a touch up treatment maybe once every year or 2 years (I've been back once for a touch up since having my bikini treated 2 years ago).

I'm not the person who wrote the above, but I also had my bikini lasered. It cost about $1200 2-3 years ago -- just over $200 per treatment and I needed 5 treatments (I have medium-fine, dark hair; the more hirsute you are, and the coarser the hair, the more treatments you typically need). It ends up being cost efficient after about a year and a half or two, if you consider a Brazillian will typically run about $60-70 ($50-60 + tip). I think the cost of laser treatments may have come down in the 2-3 years since I did it.

I'm the other pp who had the bikini lasered. The cost of lasering has come down but it is also dependent upon where you have it done. The trick is not to go with those companies that advertise on tv and radio - they are much more expensive and want you to commit to a contract of x number of treatments when you don't need that many. I went to a really nice salon in McLean (forget the name) and was charged $100 per session. Follow up sessions down the road for the random touch up were $50. You need to call around and ask questions about training, qualifications and prices.

In and out in 10 minutes. Significantly less pain than waxing - really a small zing but hardly even felt. Haven't had to even think about landscaping for over 3 years now. Going back to have the underarms zapped next. Cost was recouped long ago. Very liberating to have one less thing to put on my "to do" list.

What was the price range for this?

I paid a total of $300 which covered 3 bikini laser treatments. Haven't had to spend a dime since in 3 years. No more $, no more waxing, no more appointments, no more pain.....

Can't believe that more women (and men) aren't doing this. Laser hair removal is the world's best-kept secret.

Can the laser ladies send us some recommendations on where to go?
Thanks a bunch!

Laser Lady here - I went to Lumiere on Greensboro Drive in McLean. Very professional, very nice people. Training and educations standards all met - do check that out before you go anywhere.

NP here. Thanks ladies for all your wealth of info. I'm new to this area and was thinking about having my bikini waxed...but leaving a landing strip. I have a few questions.....are you allowed to ummm, shower or wash up before this service is provided? Is this something you have done first thing after your shower in the morning or done after work? Do you shower or apply anything after the wax is complete? Please don't laugh, I am very new to this but would love to try it. I just wanted to know what is expected if I decided to go have it done.

Also, does it itch very bad when it grows back? Is there anything I can do to prevent the itching? I don't want to walk around looking like I have crabs.

How often should it be done?

I am the OP. They did not send me to a bathing area or anything like that first. I made a late appointment and I went home and showered first. Also, bring some tissues or something if you need to clean up a bit (there were some in the room but just in case). They told me I would need to come back in a month. It's been over a week and no horrible itching yet!

thank you! I'm the pp that asked the question. You convinced me! I think I'm going to try it. I just hope it doesn't hurt.

OP here, everyone's pain tolerance is different, but I hardly batted an eye. No tylenol either.

The only thing you really MUST do - when they wax your labia, help them PULL THE SKIN TAUT. It hurts much less if the skin is taut.
