$1800 per month per kid (2 kids). But we didn't really get aggressive until about 8 years ago. Currently have about $120K for 13 year old and $110 for 11 year old. HHI of $350K

This has me curious. Are you so wealthy that the tax savings aren't worth the added time and hassle? I don't clip coupons for this reason and I've always wondered how this scales up with greater wealth.

$125 a month for each kid, an infant and a three year old. Plus all the gift money they receive. Each account was started with a $1000 lump sum. My ILs opened up 529s with $22,000 in each of them. Separately I put 300 a month I a vanguard life strategy fund which could be tapped along with other savings.

Retirement which DH and I each max out comes first. We will add more to the 529s once daycare is over.

Im not impressed with the performamce of many of the college savingd plans out that as compared to what my portfolio returns. Haven't looked at the 529 in years...enlihgten me, how are the gains? We also have a few rental properties and one of those could get it done. Really why bother, i see a clear path already.

Well, for starters, the returns aren't taxed, so there's a 30% gain right there.

Not enough. I'm saving $75/month right now for one kid. I'm bumping that up to $200/month as soon as some stuff gets dealt with - but its going to take a while. I only make $70k and I'm a single mom and my priority is retirement savings right now.

NP, but Virginia (and many other states) offer low-fee index funds.
