I was the PP who made the comment about playmakers not having a deadline. The fact that they told you the deadline is firm lets you know your kid is not valued. I have one kid who is a playmaker and the other kid is -well, let's just say a developing player. I have experienced both sides. I would go with plan B.

Firm deadline. They could care less and fill your spot easily.

BUT--is Plan B a done deal? Do you even know you have a spot?

Whatever you do, don't get caught without a travel team. Your kid's a real loser if he's not on a travel team in at least ONE sport.

And parents, shame on you who claim you hate the "impact on your family" as an excuse to hold your kid down in rec. There's a pecking order in elementary and middle school, and you're putting your kids into the "dork" group if you hold them back from travel because you can't just miss Sunday brunch at the bistro

+1
Sacrifice the bistro trips. Think about the "impact on your kid" please.

Our Club gets first time travel players at 13, 14, etc. who could kick your kid's ass.

Their super A team stars of the U13 and under all get cut later and they cry. Waaaahhhh.

The best players I know have had parents that pulled them out of travel in the formative years and trained. When they pop back in end of middle school they are light years ahead of the douches' kids.

We were in this situation with about a days notice between the two. Didn't say anything to club A (current club) and contacted club B (potential new club ) asking to get a sense of where we stood. In the end, we did get an offer for Club B, but went beyond 48 hours with Club A. Never said anything to Club A and they never did follow up to see if we were going to make a decision.

We left a message with plan B. Waiting.

i would also add in to look at the club for your son for next year. It sounds like you thought he might not make the team at the current club which is why you had a Plan B - will that likely still be the case next year and you have to investigate a Plan B as well. If so, then maybe Plan B is a better fit for your family in the long term, particularly if your son seems to prefer it.

Sounds like your club sucks. If they are teaching soccer IQ, it does not matter what kind of athlete comes to travel for the first time, he/she will never move as fast as a the ball on the foot of a well trained soccer player at the same age, even if "1st time" player is faster/stronger.

Yeah, this morning we got an "invitation" email and it said to please respond by 6/5 (i.e., today). We've been playing in the league/team for 2-3 years too. Annoying. Think we may bail, especially since DC will be playing on the school team next year too.

You are assuming a lot. Nobody said these kids weren't playing. They just weren't playing travel.

One of the best kids I know was privately trained and playing in adult leagues just for games from 13-17 until he was 'discovered'.

He said he got more out of a few 60 minute sessions than he did from an entire season with travel coaches.

Soccer IQ is not enough either. I see some clubs focus too much on trying to teach this, miss the kid's natural instincts and forgo much of the technical training a player needs.

From what I've seen with Clubs the last 5 years my kids have been playing, they have gone down hill from the day there were just 1-2 teams and the same kids were developed over time. There weren't constant open tryouts that took an entire season. Interested players could come out, if they were remarkably better than the weakest player on the team---they got that player's spot at the end of the season. Very little turnover over time.

Trained how - with a private coach?

PP is a little harsh but there is some truth to the statement, NOT the pecking order in school bit, but essentially the selfish reason for holding a kid down is true.
