Sounds like your club sucks.  If they are teaching soccer IQ, it does not matter what kind of athlete comes to travel for the first time, he/she will never move as fast as a the ball on the foot of a well trained soccer player at the same age, even if "1st time" player is faster/stronger.[/quote]

You are assuming a lot.  Nobody said these kids weren't playing.  They just weren't playing travel.

One of the best kids I know was privately trained and playing in adult leagues just for games from 13-17 until he was 'discovered'.

He said he got more out of a few 60 minute sessions than he did from an entire season with travel coaches.

Soccer IQ is not enough either.  I see some clubs focus too much on trying to teach this, miss the kid's natural instincts and forgo much of the technical training a player needs.

From what I've seen with Clubs the last 5 years my kids have been playing, they have gone down hill from the day there were just 1-2 teams and the same kids were developed over time.  There weren't constant open tryouts that took an entire season.  Interested players could come out, if they were remarkably better than the weakest player on the team---they got that player's spot at the end of the season.  Very little turnover over time.[/quote]
