| so a perm is actually a term for straightening? |
| Lol perm |
My own mother permed my hair starting when I was 2 years old. It was the early 80's after all. My hair was a ridiculous, frizzy mess from about age 2-6. She gave not a thought to the chemicals, and even permed her own hair while pregnant. |
Perm is just a chemical treatment to change the texture/wave of your hair. I'm sure OP just said perm to simplify the question (indicating chemical treatment) rather than people assuming it was straightening with an iron. |
| Ha! I thought you were going to ask if it was OK to give the baby a perm! |
Yeah. I'm surprised people don't know this. Perm just means permanent (which it's not....) but the term is used for any chemical texture treatment. Also, agree w/ PP that none of you know any black people and it's obvious. |

Geez, What is it with all of the perm haters and jokes about the 80's. I just got a body perm post-baby. I NEEDED it. My hair is straight and very fine to begin with, but once it started falling out because of the change in hormones post-baby I thought I as going to be bald. My hair looked horrible. The perm provided me with some body to cover up the thinning. It looks SO MUCH BETTER.
FWIW, I brought my 3-month-old baby. The chemicals aren't nearly as toxic or smelly as the 80's, but to be on the safe side, I the baby in his carrier just outside the room where he slept most of the time. |
+1 The real question is not nearly as interesting? |
LMAO!! My salon won't do perms. They refuse. |
|
Have a friend bring over a Lilt box kit & she can do it in the kitchen like it was 1981.
Just kidding. Sort of. Digital perms are popular. |
| I want to keep this thread on the main page because every time I see it I picture a baby with a perm. |
| I had to check the date on this post. Thought for sure it was from 1988 |
Glad you got a sitter. Please don't consider bringing your kid again. You have no idea when your kid is going to need you. A 2-3 hour stretch is a long time. My stylist would drop me like a hot potato if I did something that. It's disrespectful to the stylist. |
| It's also rude to the other clients. We don't want to hear a crying baby, unless it is a family place like Great Clips or Hair Cuttery. Don't bring your kids to the salon. I had to get a sitter, too. |
My mother got her first perm when she was 18 months old. My grandmother even took a picture of it and put it in her baby book! I also had perms all through elementary school. Seems crazy now. |
