A kid brought a gun to my MCPS high school when I was a senior there more than 20 years ago, and one of my friends back then kept one in his car all the time. I suspect that wasn't the last time either of those things happened in MCPS. Strangely enough, people who post on DCUM continue to send their kids to Montgomery County schools.

Or go private. Wouldn't you agree that the issue of guns in public schools has worsened in the last 20 years?

Overall maybe. But I can tell you as a parent at Whitman (a mere 10 minutes drive down River to Wilson) I don't worry about guns at school or violence more broadly. Of course that doesn't mean nothing could or ever has happened at Whitman (there are no guarantees in life) but it is much less likely to be an issue.

Serious question, has there ever been a mass school shooting a time an urban school? When I think of school shooting, I think of suburban high schools.

Maybe we should get rid of these, they just cause delays, the security officers look at their smartphones while the bags go though, instead of at the screen

In light of the fact that was apparently these security officers suing those x-ray machines that discovered the gun, would you like to revise your opinion?

It looks like the officers did an excellent job and deserve our highest praise. They may have prevented a very bad situation from occurring.

Of course I have revised my opinion, I am a good sense person. They indeed did a great job!

I still do not get why we had to learn what had happened from NBC instead of from the Principal. When I wrote those lines, my only info were Ms Martin's lines:
"During morning arrival the administration was notified of a weapon on school grounds. Following security and emergency protocols, MPD was promptly notified, and the weapon was confiscated during weapons abatement".

Parents would have been more reassured and better informed, had she (or whomever wrote the message on her behalf) explained that the gun was detected by the security guns at the entrance. The use of the "weapons abatement" term, plus the reference to the intervention of the MPD, gave me the impression that police had to enter, search and clear the school. A much more disturbing and unsafe situation.

Yeah, that email could have been SO much better. "Weapons abatement" sounds like something frightening. They should have said that the weapon was found by security guards to make clear that the security measures worked. Those emails are definitely not Martin's strong suit.

Those are the ones that make the news. I don't know about "mass" shootings at urban schools, but there are guns and threats and nearby shootings all the time. A few local examples to supplement Wilson:

Suitland is the burbs, not any more urban than Rockville, shooting not at school

Ballou HS: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Philip-Jones-17-Killed-in-Southeast-DC--288718791.html
Shooting AFTER leaving a high school basketball game, on MLK, not on school campus. Can happen by living in that area too.

Ballou HS again: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Teen-Takes-Gun-to-Ballou-High-School-DC-Police-413179293.html
Student took gun to school, it was found and confiscated. No shooting.

NEAR Anacostia HS

Richard Montgomery HS: http://www.mymcmedia.org/rockville-police-arrest-man-with-gun-near-richard-montgomery-high-school/

So again, for the person that wants to send their kids to a Rockville/burb school because a gun was at school...when as there ever been a shooting at a DC/Urban school? If you're truly concerned about gun safety IN the schools, you should not want to move to a suburban school as that is the highest risk of getting shot.

I don't think parent concerns are limited to a shooting IN the school versus NEAR the school.

Current Wilson student here! Love my school, my teachers, my friends, my admin team, etc. I love my rigorous classes (5 AP's, 1 honors this year!) I love how I always feel safe in my school (I'm a junior and have never once felt the slightest bit unsafe in my three years+3 years at deal), but I hate hearing wack MD/VA parents constantly trash my school online!!!!!!!

Things must have really changed since I was in high school if kids are saying "love my admin team." To the extent we even knew who the administration was, we loathed them! They were the enemy!

I don't think a student wrote that post. There are many things to like about Wilson but the admin is not one of them.

It sounds like the work of a posterior-polishing junior vice principal, not a student.
