| Well, one SB member is up for re-election this year. You should think long and hard if you want to continue with business as usual. |
Is there even anyone running against him? The last two ran un-opposed. |
That's just not true. There were 4 people running for two seats. This was in the democractic caucus in the spring. That is the point about getting involved much sooner. There is a challenger for Lander this spring. http://www.insidenova.com/news/arlington/arlington-school-board-member-picks-up-intra-party-challenge/article_303dd44a-ebae-11e6-8ed7-338a7b902c34.html Maura McMahon is running against Lander. She's very smart, I've talked to her about other Arlington issues. Very grounded in reality. |
| No one who runs as a Democrat is going to do squat to get rid of Murphy. |
Maura = CARD. It's not who she is at all, but she'll be a vessel for white Arlingtonians who are done with "the poors". |
What? I don't understand this comment? |
| I wish one of the active AEM people would run! |
| Back to the question - how do we get a new Superintendent? |
They sponsor meet and greets for the current school board. How would they change anything? |
Do you mean this in a generic sense or did you have a specific individual in mind? Murphy is rumored to be having staff update his CV with an eye to applying for an opening in Loudoun. That said, I don't know if there's an opening in Loudoun so this could just be complete BS. |
The short answer is the superintendent is appointed by the School Board, who reviews the super's performance annually. https://www.apsva.us/superintendents-office/school-board-superintendent-relationship/ I'd start by asking each school board member how they personally voted and evaluated the super's performance. I assume they are supposed to evaluate his progress based on the five strategic goals the County defined. These are: Goal 1: Challenge and Engage All Students Goal 2: Eliminate Achievement Gaps Goal 3: Recruit, Retain and Develop High Quality Staff Goal 4: Provide Optimal Learning Environments Goal 5: Meet the Needs of the Whole Child APS website tells us to: Leave a voice mail message for the Board or individual Board members by calling 703-228-6015. Messages should include the caller’s full name and best phone number to call back. I think one could honestly say that he's done a good job with #3. I personally have a lengthy list of APS failures to engage students, achievement gaps between lower SE population schools and higher SE population schools are higher than ever, and there is absolutely no way no how that any APS is interested in the needs of the whole child, with lessening interest in recess and wellness and more teaching to the tests. |
| Maura McMahon is worth a close look for SB. She's in favor of a fourth comprehensive high school rather than some sort of unnamed "program" on the W-L site. Can you imagine cramming 1300 more kids there? |
Does she have any plan for where it would go? Or how to pay for it? |
A plan? Who knows, but that's getting way ahead of yourself. We need to have a board that will say we need a fourth high school first. I used to think they were just playing a long game, but with perhaps one exception, they are not. We have to get them out. Lander is a good place to start. He seems very nice, but he isn't interested in being very honest about our predicament. He has also said some really silly things regarding poverty and Farms students. Maura is a nice combination of kindness and sensibility. |
What I was saying about the whites who want to get rid of the poors coming out to support Maura (b/c opposition to Lander). |
