What to do in the summers if admitted to TJ?

If she tests out of Math 4, then she can take research stats followed by Math 5 her freshman year. This is pretty common. Then she can take Calculus her sophomore year. This is not uncommon, but I will offer that a few of my DD's friends who did this are really regretting it now that they are in the midst of Calc BC.
I would not recommend taking research stats in the summer. I have a degree in stats and it is equivalent to a college level intro stats class. They cover a ton of material and move very quickly. I can't image learning that material in 2.5 weeks. |

Most kids do not do RS I over the summer and they shouldn't. Like IBET, TJ views RS stats as a way help orient freshman and make sure they have what they need to high level research down the road. TJ is a huge transition, and you want your kid to have the benefit of the supports TJ has in place They learn essential things and do a couple of projects one a major project with data collection, during the semester It can't be replicated in 2.5 weeks. Keep your kid on track with other freshman for core classes (IBET + RS). the first semester. Math 4 also has the reputation of being one of the hardest math semesters. And math 4 teachers are not going to be more forgiving of a freshman. If your kid is admitted, talk to guidance about sequence. But they should really just take history, or CS if they don't plan advanced CS during the summer TJ also usually offers Math 5 as a summer option. You kid could do that after sophomore year, when they are better oriented and then take Calculus sophomore year . Don't underestimate the challenges of transition to TJ. Because Math 4 is only a semester, they do not have time to get their grade up if they do poorly on the first test or 2. But mostly, TJ isn't a race. Really. Don't push your kid through foundational classes. |

| Thank you PPs for your responses. Our goal isn't to push DD through foundation classes, but looking at the suggested schedules, if DD takes RS in fall Freshman, Math 4 in Spring, then Math 5 in fall of Sophomore, then she has to take a Math elective in the spring and wait for junior year to take Calculus. I'm just afraid that a semester break between Math 5 and Calculus will have DD forget what she learns in Precalculus. Maybe I'm overthinking this. |

I think you are overthinking it.  I know there is also a Math 6, but I'm not sure it offered all the time. I assume they will go over these options after the math placement exam.
As the PP said, Math 4 is hard. My DD is in it now and her teacher is also really, really bad. She got a poor test score early in the second quarter and it's been a long haul to her grade back up. |

What Math 4, 5 and 6 means in TJ? I only Pre-Cal, Cal BC, multi-variable Cal etc...

Math 3, 4 & 5 compresses 2 years of standard math curriculum (Algebra II trig & Pre-Calc) into 3 semesters, so kids can also take research stats. My general understanding (as a mom who majored in English) is Math 3 Algebra II Math 4. Trig Math 5 Pre-Calc But you can get a better sense from the online course catalog. |

Your kid has to be admitted first, so hold your horses. If they are admitted, then they can register for TJ summer pschool. They can't take just any FCPS online stats class. And it is much more intensive than summer Geometry. You are doing the equivalent of a semester of college level stats in 2 1/2 weeks. It's also a bad idea if your kid is not already very strong in stats. Lots of other TJ classes require that you have the TJ specific stats foundation. Which is why it is required your first semester, with no option to test out. |

Are Math 5&Math 6 class Honor class or AP class? Looks the math class in TJ is different from the ones in base school.

| From what I saw with my kid, summer Stats was much less intense than summer Geometry. Partially because it half the time and partially because Stats is in a classroom and Geometry is online. |

| Can someone take online EPF Pass/Fail online in Grade 8 (May 1 - Jun 21, 2018) and then take, say, Research Stat 1/Ancient Civ, at TJ (beginning June 25, 2018)? Is there an FCPS/TJ policy that prevents taking two courses over the same summer? |
