I would do something fun and lively with personality like Mintwood or Pearl Dive. I really don't get the Blue Duck fans - so sterile and zero atmosphere since it's in hotel and feels like hotel - food is okay but not great.

Old ebbitt was taken over by the chain that owns clydes ? Hamilton is also owned by clydes. Just say no. That's some seriously mediocre food.

Right? I moved out of DC seven years ago and these places were hit a decade before that! (I love Jaleo but come on!)

I'm not surprised because out towners usually are here to do "D.C." stuff and have meat and potatoes palette and want an"experience" , they're not going to want a hipster bar in the middle of "nowhere", away from the tourist spots. They want a restaurant their friends may have heard of.

Ambar on Capitol Hill is supposed to be very good. We're going this weekend for the first time so I'll report back. It's food from the Balkans and pretty new.

Agree that our friends and family from out of town want to do "DC stuff" as in museums and memorials . . . but they visit from Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, NY, Seattle, Boston and other places with really interesting food scenes. They're not looking for meat and potatoes.

I went to the new one that opened in Clarendon. Food was good, but I wouldn't rush back.

OP asked for a "DC experience", not "the best" or "cool new".

When you take them to a place that's years past its prime it's only going to be full of out-of-towners that don't know any better.
