Single woman just under 100k in Tysons...need budget advice!

I'm definitely looking at roomies, for an easier commute (work in Sterling). My parents live in Prince George's Co, but idk if that's a commute I could handle.

Stay with them for one week and see if you can handle it.

Start putting money in a Roth IRA (you can only do that until you are making above $117-132k) and contribute to your 401k.

You're doing great.

For all the posters suggesting OP move in with her parents....

She works in tysons

She lives in Sterling

They live in PG county

No flipping way. Commute is too much. OP if you do that, best to also bank the grooming and brunch / entertainment because you'll never see anyone.

But I also think $1700 per month is high to live in sterling.

I live in Tysons and work in Sterling. Other way around.

I'd find a cheaper apartment but wouldn't move home.

Find a cheaper phone plan

Put 1k a month towards the loans. Save for retirement a sap.

Since you work in Sterling, why not move out to Reston or somewhere closer to Sterling? You should be able to find cheaper rent out there.

I don't think your problem is in the expenses you've listed, but in what you have not listed. The other PP is right, you don't seem to have a clear enough picture of where your money is going. You say you save $1k a month, but that you actually had to spend money on new furniture, etc.

You need to get on a written budget so that before the month starts you decide how much you're going to spend on going out, eating out, furniture/decorations, etc.

$1700 is a steal in Tyson's. Some of y'all need to do some searching on apartments.com, because Tyson's isn't cheap to begin with, especially with Metro.

OP, are you using a grocery store app? That will help you save some money.

I think your only real savings could be from finding a 2-bedroom with a roommate. You could probably save $500 a month at least.

Anonymous wrote:Hey guys! I am a single, late 20s woman living in the Tysons/McLean Area. I recent just switched companys. While I love the environment, I took a slight paycut ($105k to 95ish K)

Monthly budget
Take Home- after taxes, healthcare, etc- about 4800
Rent- 1716 Not bad
Tuition (grad school part time)- $580/month
Cell phone- 140 (w/AT&T) WTF is wrong with you, get Project Fi and you'll pay like half that
Utilities + Internet- 100
Gas- 120 Serious? This is really big. What kind of rental are you in? SFH?
Groceries- 200 Impressive, but makes me think there is a missing line item for eating out.
Grooming- 110 (brows, nails, feet) Dumb. Stop this.

Debt
No car and credit card debt YES congrats!
loans- about $35000k undergrad, no grad debt Not bad for DC, congrats!

Any suggestions on where to cut. My lease is up in April...not certain on renewing lease, though its close to work.
My parents live in the area as an option.

Comments above in bold. You still have 1834 in income that is not accounted for. Your budget isn't accurate, because if it was you'd have a 38% surplus every month. You need to provide more info.

She said gas was gasoline for her car, not gas in her apartment.

She saves $1000 per month.

A 20 something year old childless female who can save $1,000 per month does not need to cut out grooming.

Thanks for catching. Still, that seems high. OP said she lives near work, so why so much gas? Drive a Denali?

To PP re: grooming, this much per month is not money well spent unless you are paid for your looks. There are cheaper ways to do manage grooming.

I wouldn't cut out grooming but maybe space out your visits a little more to save a little.

Definitely find a roommate or a nice group house. You are at an age where it is still justifiable. You could save a ton more a month with this alone.

In the future when your contract is up I would get a much lower monthly cell phone plan.

Other then that it sounds like you are doing good and have plans to beef up the savings.

Move closer to work for cheaper. I have a tenant in a really nice 1 BR condo in Reston Town Center for $1575/month (Market rent is probably closer to $1600 but she is an incredible tenant).

Or if you want to stay in tysons, absolutely get a roommmate.

On the cell phone, i'm guessing an iPhone. Thats an unnecessary luxury. Return it or sell it, and buy an unlocked android for $200-$300 all-in, and monthly service for $35.
