oh shut up, PP. Obviously OP is dealing with the bigger issue now, and is just working through the gift issue with us bc of the child, and because he has no good ideas.

Well OP, whatever you get her, she's going to complain about, so take the pressure off yourself. Some good suggestions by PPs; just go get a pile of those things and don't worry too much about if she'll like it or not, because she won't but you will at least be treading water (vs drowning) since you got them and made an effort.

And make yourself a few new years resolutions with time limits attached.

Get an ab rocker. My dad got that for my stepmom one year. Totally ruined her day lol

OP, when she sulks for a few days, what does she do? Does she retreat into the kitchen? Into her ipad? Zone out to mindless tv? Workout like crazy?

However she is self-soothing, I would go with something that helps her to do that. It would be something she already associates with positive feelings, and it might help keep some peace until you can address things on a more fundamental level. It's a little passive-agg, sure, but better than her flying off the handle for you not understanding her at all??

Female, early 50s, no real hobbies per se. Seems to dislike everything these days.

Something cashmere.

+1000 I feel sorry for your teenager.
