OP, The very sam thing happened to my non-black child earlier earlier this year but it was on the playground. The other child is 9 and apparently had no idea what the N word means other than it is insulting. I mentioned it to the mother who was horrified and she talked to her child. I also told my child that this should never ever be repeated and explained why. The issue hasn't come up since then.
I think it's fine that your DH talked to the principal but I wouldn't have gone that route. Children that age are still experimenting and figuring out what "bad" words are and what they mean and I would not overreact and focus on my own child. I would feel differently if this word was said to a child who is black and the other child had some understanding of the history of that word and was purposely using it. |
