No it is actually a Dutch store. Issie Cohen did start his original corner stores in ghetto areas, but he prospered with Giant |
| Touche! ^^ We use Giant because of the gas points. |
We like the McLean Giant. Back when the Cohens owned it, the salad bars used to be .99 cent/per lbs every summer. |
You can get gas points at Safeway as well, which can be used at Sunoco now. |
| Giant in Van Ness is terrible. I try to avoid it. But sometimes get stuck having to go. Always dissatisfied. Arrived. Food options. Cleanliness. Yuck. |
| I haven't shopped at Giant in years. Every once in a while I run in there to grab something and after waiting 30 min to pay I again confirm why I do not shop there. I am a Trader Joe's girl all the way! |
| We are on team Giant. We go to the one in Falls Church, and love the self scanners. It saves so much time (except when you get audited). We usually go around 9 am on Sunday mornings, and have gotten to know many of the employees by name. |
| I drive past a Giant to go to Wegmans. Sometimes I will try to "quick pop in to Giant to get _______" and every time I realize I have made a terrible error. |
Eh, Safeway has gas points and their prices are better especially when you load online coupons. Overall though, Costco has the lowest gas prices, but the problem is their gas station is 20 min from my house so I have to make a conscious effort to get out there. |
Giant has on-line coupons too. Download the app. |

Giant is SO much better than Safeway. Safeways are all dimly lit, with a weird odor and surly cashiers.
I prefer Wegman's to both, but there isn't one close enough for regular shopping. We usually do Costco for the big items and then Washington's Green Grocer for most produce. But if I need something either of those don't have, it's Giant all the way. |
Sam's club has a phone app that lets you do this. It's awesome! |
| I never found a grocery store anywhere in or near DC that I liked. Ah, Publix. How I miss you..... |
Harris Teeter was ok until it was bought out by Kroger. Sigh. |
| I do the bulk of our shopping at Aldi, and what I can't find there I buy at Safeway, Giant or Harris Teeter. The Safeway closest to me seems to have the fewest number of cashiers, and I hate to do self checkout with more than just a few items. Giant at least has cashiers, but it's a little out of my way. Harris Teeter has my heart for super double coupons and the fact that they take the things out of the cart for me, but without coupons and sales I find them to be more expensive than the others. |
