Peaceful protesting is part of our constitutional rights. The students have the right to assemble in protest.

MCPS Student Code of Conduct Freedom of Assembly

Students have a right to assemble for discussions of issues of importance to them and to demonstrate peacefully. Students have a responsibility to consult with the school principal to determine if the activity will be allowed during the school day, outside the school day, or during lunch, and the type of supervision required. Students also have a responsibility to work cooperatively with staff members, take reasonable steps to ensure that the activity is orderly, and make up missed work.

They did not do that and they closed down roads without informing the police ahead of time either.

Note from Blair Principal:
"Hello Blair Families,

As you may have heard, high school students across the nation are planning to walk out to protest current events. We are taking a constructive approach to ensure that students remain safe on campus and that there will be minimum disruption to the school day and their learning. Some of our students are planning a peaceful protest at 10 a.m. today, Monday, November 14. Participation is voluntary and not encouraged by school staff. To ensure their safety, which is our TOP priority, we are providing a safe place (our stadium) for students. The time planned for the protest is 10 a.m. Students are to return to the school building at the end of period 3 (11:07 a.m.) to resume their day. Parents will be notified through our automated attendance system if their child is marked absent from any classes today.

Students participating in this protest must bring a note from their parent/guardian within three days stating they approve this absence or they will be marked unexcused. As always, students who choose to leave campus without parent permission will have an unexcused absence.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Principal Renay Johnson."

Looks like they are excused to go to the stadium to protest, but not march the streets of SS. Will be interesting to see how this is handled.

My kid is in that crowd, and I will be writing him a note saying I approve of his absence. He is devastated by this election and the aftermath and I am proud that he is speaking out.

For the record, he is a magnet student with a weighted GPA well over 4.0. I have zero concerns about college admissions.

You should be proud of your child... but it does not really matter his/her GPA... (I know some were saying they will work at McD some day) but equality is equality.... even kids with LDs, low IQ, etc.

PP here, and I agree.

Bet the school administration will be lenient.

As they should.

Unexcused absence will be on their record regardless of their leniency. That may hurt these students when applying to colleges and it's about time we stop coddling these teens and realize that actions have consequences.

Agree

I watched the protest, they all just walked, talked, used their phone, and giggled. A few chants. They did however block traffic from people that needed to get to work, put more police (that they also hate and are against) to work to keep them safe, and missed an entire day of school work.

But sure, administration should be lenient.

Sounds like what happens at most peaceful protests...where did you read that they hate the police?..and who said they were out for the whole day??

You need to go back to high school and learn conjunctions and article placements, as well as spelling and grammar.

I will be so psyched if they make it all the way to DC and everything stays peaceful! I will pray (and send positive vibes) they all stay safe.

That info is relevant because...?

Regardless of what you think, he IS your president.

What are they protesting against? I understand they don't like the outcome of the election. I understand they don't like and/or support Trump.

But what do they want? When you protest, you are asking for change. What is the change that they want?
Anonymous
Is that all people think about this. Whether the absence is excused or not? Missing a day of school is reeeeeeally not going to change someone's future, people. What the hell??

Because PPs were saying that an unexcused absence would have a negative impact on college admissions.

Oh my goodness. My ds is one of the kids being interviewed on local tv and he walked all the off campus. He discussed this with me and his dad and we told him to do what he feels right. I will be excusing his absence also if the school will agree to that.
