It really doesn't work that way ... at least not yet. Trump will ride the gilded elevator from Leader of the Free World to tinpot laughingstock in record time. Who will step up with intellectual and moral authority on the world stage? It has to be Merkel by default. Wouldn't that be ironic given that the US played a critical role rebuilding Germany as a modern, Westrn democracy out of the ashes of intolerance and nationalism.
