Sham Chancellor Search

Anonymous
I am wondering if naming a new chancellor is not in itself just window dressing. With the chancellor reporting to DME Niles, perhaps she and Katherine Bradley will in fact be running the show. So why not Eugene Pinkard?

If Niles is really running the show, why not give her the job and the better salary that goes with it?

And give DPR to someone else. DCPS is enough for one person.

Great point. Why do we need a chancellor and a Deputy Major for Education. It seems that position can be services by one person. Especially, since Pinkard's resume and experience level is so thin. As a matter of fact, I do not think the powers to be, would even recommend Eugene Pinkard to be the principal of Deal, if it ever became vacant. Knowing how this community works, the Mayor and Pinkard would be treated the same way the homeless shelter was dealth with when people get serious. Let's get real, about this search. Give the process a real chance!

just because an anonymous poster on DCUM says the meetings are window dressing, doesn't mean they are window dressing

The DME is there to manage both DCPS and help manage charter compliance.

She's the one who has to try to inject the 'public' into Public Charter School.

Not so much. She has no authority over charters or OSSE and knows it as a former charter leader.

So why the multiple positions? Is any one person actually held accountable for the DCPS schools?

The mayor?

Editorial in today's Washington Post, says stay the course. Low test scores! The fix is in Pinkard, Bradley, Henderson, and Bowser. How low can you go?

Well the whole position is theoretically different than initially envisioned. Once the DME was put over the chancellor it means the DME is really in charge. I am not sure any kind of superstar (if they exist) is going to want to come with that reporting structure.

Typically a superintendent reports to a school board, which is separate from the jurisdiction's political leadership (see Montgomery County). We're really weird in DC although we've tried just about every structure possible.

I'm pretty convinced it doesn't really matter who the chancellor is.

DC complains about the lack of representation on Capitol Hill, but it is perfectly fine for the Mayor to decide on the new chancellor. Other reputable systems have fully qualified superintendents, NOT chancellors. No specific requirements necessary for chancellor. Your next chancellor might be the Sulaimon Brown. He probably needs a job.

One is about as qualified as the other. Shame on DC!

trinity is a big teacher training school in dc. I hardly think you'd say the same thing about georgetown.

He went to Georgetown undergrad.

I used to work with Gene Pinkard at Marie Reed. He's smart, cares about kids, knows how to deal with parents, and understands how to get things done. As a DCPS parent, I'd be happy if he becomes Chancellor although word from inside DCPS is that it's not a sham search- they're really looking widely.

The job responsibilities are in the statute creating the position. Look it up.
