Contrary to public perception, Kate's eventual marriage to William was borne out of a lot of patience and thick skin on her part. They dated for around 10 years before he finally proposed and prior to that he publicly, at least broke up with her twice. Meanwhile, during their courtship she was expected to not step a toe out of line, not work, or do anything controversial while she waits for him and the royal family to decide if she was good enough to marry him. Meanwhile, every time he dumped her, he'd work the royal circles only to be rebuffed by every other girl because no one wanted the baggage of being his wife. So, he'd then come back and she'd take him back.

There were also very loud rumors about how mean and rude Williams extended family and friends were about Kate's family's humble roots. That kind of stuff doesn't just go away. Even the Spencers, who were by all accounts very blue blood and "in with the firm" complained about feeling snubbed and excluded by the royals. They are trying with the Middletons, that is for sure, to at least keep up public appearances.

Regardless, Kate isn't close with anyone of her in laws except for Harry. They're often seen joking and laughing and she seems the most relaxed around him. She is awkward and distant with the Queen, when William is away she kind of hides out by herself and even turned down Charles and Camilla's invitation to hang out with them, according to VF.

So, *Shrug*, I don't know. She seems really quite alone and relies heavily on her own family for emotional support. The stress shows on her frame and face, regardless of clothes and makeup.

Look at all of the pictures of the five of them clumped together. They are always in the exact same order based off level of importance.

It is no different that presidential events, military events, state dinners, weddings, etc.

We know how much you hate Princess Kate OP since you post a disdainful thread about her every week or so, complete with how awful/skinny/ugly/frumpy/unfashionable/haggard/old you perceive her to look, but really, where the royals stand in public and who they stand next to is most certainly a simple protocol decision.
