male colleague staring at lips

I do that to everyone if in a large room that echoes, or has a din from conversations noise, doesn't have to be really loud even. I freakin can't hear you mumblers.

Depending on where he's from, his culture may have a preference of not looking directly in someone's eyes - particularly someone of the opposite sex. I don't think he's staring at your upper lip, which you seem to be a little sensitive about.

Or, again, hearing impaired. People with hearing impairments can often sound like they have a foreign accent that you just cannot place.

This is me exactly! working mom, finally diagnosed about 4 years ago! I have always done this as I found my mind wondering.

And to the person who said "report him", I sure hope you were joking. people like you give humans a bad name.

C) does he do this with other people or just you?

I have hairy upper lip.

Did you post this OP? An unusually hairy lip on women is distracting, and I say that as a woman. There is one colleague who has the most hair I've ever seen on a woman and while I respect her decision to leave it there, I definitely notice it as one of her most prominent features. I compel myself not to stare, but perhaps if your coworker if from a country where staring isn't considered as rude as it is here, then he's not stopping himself and doesn't think it's an issue.

I work with an outed lesbian who has a mustache. dresses like a man, too

At first it was a little distracting, but now it's totally "our norm" in the office.

I don't think OP is as hairy as my colleague, however. So maybe it's does have something to do with hearing or with an accent.

I would assume seeing the lips help him understand you. It could be worse. He could be looking at your chest.

I have trouble hearing in some situations and I stare at lips so that I don't have to ask people to repeat themselves.
