boy name Rigel

Sorry, Op but not a fan. No nicknames and too difficult to pronounce. Can you tell us your other son's name ( as PP's have asked) Maybe then we could help.

Sounds like a cream that's applied topically on a fungal infection.

I'm not a theologian, but I really can't think of any! Maybe if you shared that name it would help us make recommendations for your second. I had two boys and also struggled with a name for the younger one, so no shame!

How about Asher? Might be a touch common but still isn't in the top 20. Solid OT/Hebrew name.

Or Josiah?

I really don't like Rigel, OP, sorry!

The only biblical boy names that start w r that i can think of are Reuben and Rufus. Op, is it one of those? I don't like Rigel...it seems like it would always be an issue for ppl to pronounce and he'd always have to be answering questions about the names meaning and origin his whole life. I have a name that elicits those questions and I hated it so much as a kid and still get annoyed by it occasionally as an adult. I agree boy names are hard especially when you already used your favorite one but I would keep looking if I were you...

I put Rigel into nymbler and got the following 'similar name' suggestions: Talon, Ace, Phoenix, Apollo, Loyal, Caesar, Hawk, Altair, Ranger, Baron. Some pretty weird names but some kind of cool. Also searched for names similar to Reuben, thinking Reuben is your older sons name? And got: Asa, Judah, Asher, Amos, Cyrus, and Elam among tons of other more common biblical names like Samuel and David. Just in case any of those interest you, op. Nymbler is kind of a fun website to generate a lot of name suggestions based on names you plug in.

Rigel, like Nigel? Or Rigel, like Reagal?

Either way, no.

We are having a lot of trouble finding a name for DS#2 (due in 2.5 months so we do have some time). With my first, we were lucky enough to have a family name that we love and is the right balance for us between not common but not weird or difficult to pronounce. Now we are struggling to find anything we like half as much for #2.

My first son's name starts with R (biblical name) and I have been contemplating the name Rigel for #2. I just like the sound of the name, but it happens to the name of a star in the constellation Orion. Unfortunately it apparently features in Star Trek--I think it's a galaxy or something. DH and I aren't trekkies and I'm afraid of giving DS#2 a name with that connotation.

Any thoughts--especially from Star Trek fans--is the name that strongly associated with the show? Any other reactions to the name, since it seems to be fairly uncommon?

Sorry - I just don't like that name at all. Yes, I associate it with the name of a star and the show. If you want to go with an R name, how about Rohan. Love that name.

I like Rigel a lot and I am well aware it's a star in Orion. I would never consider pronouncing incorrectly. I wouldn't instantly think about Star Trek but I would think you were astronomy buffs. If you aren't interested in studying up on your constellations, maybe you should go ahead and consider a more conventional name.

FWIW, my first two have biblical names but my 3rd does not. It just went that way.

I'm dating myself, but I can only think of the Reagle Beagle in Threes Company...

I know a Rigel.... He pronounces it reeg-ell He is awesome, so I like the name because of that I think he says the "correct" pronunciation is rye-gell, but his parents didn't know that lol

I also know a Rigel. He is Hispanic and pronounces it Reeg-el as well.

Nigel is a cute name, why not just go with that?

It's really bad.

It's a terrible name in my opinion. But I think the bigger issue is that you found a Biblical family name for your first child but for your second you're contemplating a weird name that has no connection to your family and begs instruction for how to pronounce it. Don't. It's just unfair. Dig into your family tree and find something for your new baby or at least pick a solid Biblical name. And why are you determined that it be an "R" name?

Not loving it for a child. I did not know how to pronounce it until I read the comments. IMO, it's a cool name for a dog.

Rigel is pretty rough. I would pronounce it to rhyme with wiggle. Or I guess just like wriggle.
