I feel a little silly asking this, but since it's an anonymous forum...
We are having a lot of trouble finding a name for DS#2 (due in 2.5 months so we do have some time). With my first, we were lucky enough to have a family name that we love and is the right balance for us between not common but not weird or difficult to pronounce. Now we are struggling to find anything we like half as much for #2. My first son's name starts with R (biblical name) and I have been contemplating the name Rigel for #2. I just like the sound of the name, but it happens to the name of a star in the constellation Orion. Unfortunately it apparently features in Star Trek--I think it's a galaxy or something. DH and I aren't trekkies and I'm afraid of giving DS#2 a name with that connotation. Any thoughts--especially from Star Trek fans--is the name that strongly associated with the show? Any other reactions to the name, since it seems to be fairly uncommon? |
| My main concern would be pronunciation - I have no idea how to say this name, is it Rye-gel or Ree-gel (or -jel??). |
| I think it sounds dumb. |
| Rye-jel? |
| I really like it. It's the name of the brightest star in the Orion system. It's derived from an old Arabic name. |
| Does it rhyme with Nigel? |
|
This is Larla's little brother.
Just no. |
| I am a big fan of farscape and while i would seriously consider naming my daughter Aeryn, I would never name a son Rygel. |
|
How is it pronounced?
Rye? Rih? Gel? As in hair gel? Or as in Gelapegos? 4 different combos. If i am already asking so many questions, maybe not? |
| It's ugly. |
OP here: that's how I was pronouncing it in my head (like British name Nigel). But I guess the pronunciation isn't necessarily straightforward. |
This is correct. Like Nigel. Go for it. People will think you are science nerds. |
| I don't understand the attraction to a name that you don't know how to pronounce. |
OMG, this. |
| Why-gel? |
