| There are definitely kids in private schools here that are 14 and sending nude pics of themselves to each other and giving oral. This occurs in places as varied as Montgomery Mall, downtown Bethesda, and Bishops garden at STA. Know for a fact. Have seen these pics on my child's phone. They were sent to my child from others. Have also been told by my child which friend is getting BJs and which friends are giving them. These are middle schoolers at Big 5 schools as well as smaller schools that end in 8th. We've had the discussion about the legality of having these pics and distribution them. We've also had the talk about STDs and how easily Herpes is spread. We've also talked about boys disrespect for girls when they use them for BJs and girls disrespect for themselves when they give them. We've also talked about the hypocrisy of girls being called sluts and boys being applauded for their sexual escapades. You may think your child is innocent but unless you are regularly checking their phones, which you pay for by the way which means it's a privilege not a right for your kid to use, then you really can't be certain. And just because they SAY they aren't engaging in this behavior doesn't mean you should believe them. Can't wait for high school.... |
The song is called "Down in the DM." It has a catchy beat and the kids love it but I was quite shocked when I watched the video. They play the clean version on the radio but the video is unedited. DM stands for direct messaging and for teens to see the video, it makes it seem ok to send photos of genatalia to friends and people you like. I had to tell my kids again it is not ok and the pictures live on foreve |
| ^^forever. |
Agree. Do you people really think your kids aren't lying to you? Think again. |

There was a situation at my child's middle school recently involving unclothed pictures. One of the boys threatened to put sexual pictures and videos online. The girl in the pictures said she didn't care. The guy posted a bunch of pictures of her on a Instagram account.
This opened up a very long conversation about boys who use girls as a social status chip with their friends, and the fallout that comes from being around boys like that. We also had a long chat about the risks of sending nude pictures. I noted that even though the girl said she didn't care, it would be devastating to most girls. I also told her to keep telling people what the boy did, so other girls would be aware of it. |

Sexting is the most eminent threat, really. Kids were having sex in MS 20 years ago when I was in MS but we didn't have cell phones to sext.
Because of the industry I'm in, I know that even when a photo is deleted from the phone, it's not usually really gone. Therefore, if my kid gets an unwanted nude and deletes it, if the phone is examined at a later date during an investigation, the threat of that photo showing up is very possible. The sexting is really ruining lives. Most of DD's friends (13) have a very good grasp on birth control and being safe "fooling around." We've done a good job of reinforcing those aspects in school, but now we need to add technology and sexting into the classes. |
Gee. What about the moral aspect of 13 years old not having sex in the first place? |
NP and could have written the earlier post. 45 from Midwest. I am also known as a hard-ass amongst DC's friends due to the "fun" I had in middle school. DH was the same way, btw. Age 47 from east coast. |
Let's be real though- the majority of kids in middle school are not sexually active. The ones that are would definitely lie of course so its nearly impossible to tell who is doing what but we know from loads of school studies across the country that its still a sizeable majority that are not actually lying about it! |

I remember my friend had sex at 14. I'm sure she wasn't the only one.
I'm concerned about the early sexual context at schools. In our Elementary school I hear about them having boyfriends, asking a girl to a dance, etc. It's crazy early. Why can't kids be kids? |
| All you mothers who keep saying that your kids would never do that better hold onto your asses. |
Yep. Exactly. |
Nah...some kids just end up living in their parent's basement playing video games forever
|
Because kids being kids involves boyfriends/girlfriends, etc. |
No, it doesn't. Did kids have boyfriends/girlfriends in the Elementary school in the 50s or 60s? No. I'm generation X, girls didn't claim any boyfriends until high school. |
