Maybe I should elaborate. There's a popular song out where the line is "snapchat me yo p*ssy". I'm not entirely blaming music but tweens/teens are able to communicate a lot more because of technology. They could be sharing videos, pics, etc. and their parents not know when teens 30 years ago couldn't (so easily). Also nowhere did I say that 25 years ago some MS kids weren't having sex, because of course some were.

I haven't really worried about it with my kids - one has social issues, one is immature and just doesn't look at girls that way yet and one isn't yet in MS. But, I have three friends whose kids started having sex in MS. It surprised me for sure at this age. As for kids in our social circle, it was HS until we started to see sexting.

You implied that technology was making sex among middle schoolers more common than it otherwise would be. Some of us disagree with you.

My middle school kids are not having sex - not even in relationships. But some kids are in relationships; who knows if they're having sex. When I was in 7th grade thirty or so years ago, we were definitely fooling around and in mini-relationships, trying to go around the bases to second or third. One girl in 8th grade supposedly got pregnant. Fooling around was totally common in middle school when I was growing up -- I don't see it or hear about it from my kids at their DC private school though.

Oh there were definitely people having sex when I was in middle school. As for where and when. After school at home while parents were at work. Either both parents worked or they went to a friend's house where both parents worked. I gave my first blow job in middle school at the home of a boy who had divorced parents and no one was ever home. I told my parents I was staying after school for something. I knew several couples who were having full on sexual intercourse in middle school. My mother saw a girl from my school walking to a house in our neighborhood daily and asked me who she was. I told my mom the girl's name and added she was going to our neoghbor's house to have sex with their son who was there alone after school every day until dad and stepmom got home from work. There were many other such stories. My mom did not believe it. My poor middle schooler has very little privacy as a result of these antics in middle school. I went to school in FCPS and came from a family that wanted for nothing.

May I ask how old you are?

I am in my 40s and we had only 1-2 girls who were sexually promiscuous in middle school.

I'm concerned about phones facilitating sexting/nude pics. Just because of how easy it is for kids to share that stuff. I think even generally nice girls and guys are almost certain to share stuff like that with their friends, and it quickly spreads all over the school, which is embarrassing and painful for the sender. i don't see phones as facilitating actual sex acts at an earlier age, except I guess insofar as they make it easier to meet up and hang out when nonprents are around.

Where I live MS students are much more innocent/sheltered than they were when I was a kid. Far less opportunities to fool around

I don't think phones make a difference at all. I was in middle school from 93-96, in 8th grade lots of people were going to 2nd & 3rd base, giving blow jobs, etc. I'm sure a small group was also having sex. I didn't have sex until 17, but was doing other things in 8th grade - I was a very early bloomer, looked a lot older and for me personally, I was ready for that kind of relationship. No regrets.
