He explained that essay. It was a critique of gender roles and he admits it was horribly written. When you take the quote out of context, it looks bad but the statement itself was not bad. You are comparing apples and oranges. Hillary destroyed that little girl. Make of it what you will but she is no feminist.

Feminism has changed a lot since 1975.

There are no gray areas here. A 12 year-old rape victim is not fair game for any decent human being.

Our view of rape, and rape laws, have also changed a lot since 1975.

Feminists were already trying to fight those horrific smear tactics that were used in court to destroy and discredit rape victims. I am sorry but Hillary Clinton is not a good person. Regardless of the law at the time, she did not behave like a human being with a heart.

Let's go back in time 40 years and tell Hillary not to defend her client to the standards practiced in the court.

What essay? Please post a link.

You can find it. His campaign dismisses it as a hippie-era relic aimed at changing sex roles.

I would not say they dismiss it. I saw an interview with him about it and he was apologetic and said that it was horrible writing and pretty embarrassing. It was also written 40 years ago.

And Hillary Clinton defended this person 40 years ago, correct?

Saying it it was an attempt at a Fifty Shades of Grey thing is pretty dismissive.

We are talking about a real little girl vs a bad article in a tiny publication. Apples and oranges and his intentions were good. He just did a bad job of it.

Oh, dear Lord.
If the thought of protecting a 12-year-old who was brutally raped has changed since 1975, then we must have been a terribly callous nation in ’75.
I was a young adult then. It has NOT changed that dramatically.
In 1975, the rape of a 12-year-old was outrageous and unacceptable. Period.

Then, as now, the rapist is entitled to a defense attorney, and the defense attorney is supposed to represent him, not the victim. The victim has her own attorney, who represents her.

Sorry but in my world there is no excuse for a so-called "feminist" to destroy a 12 year old child who has been raped.

And then 30-some years later expect that same little girl to believe you when you say things like "All victims deserve to be believed" and tell her vote for you

You know, if you really think this was okay, then you are a pretty crappy person. I hope you don't believe that. Really, it is best to keep quiet about this because you are only making her look worse.

Not that PP. I'm neither a Hillary fan nor a Hillary hater, but like many of the lawyers on this site, will defend a defense attorney.

Yeah, I grew up in a family of attorneys and heard that crap all my life. There is no excuse.

You think this was "traditional gender roles"?

"A man goes home and masturbates his typical fantasy. A woman on her knees, a woman tied up, a woman abused."

"A woman enjoys intercourse with her man — as she fantasizes being raped by 3 men simultaneously."

"Have you ever looked at the Stag, Man, Hero, Tough magazines on the shelf of your local bookstore? Do you know why the newspaper with the articles like “Girl 12 raped by 14 men” sell so well? To what in us are they appealing?"

He was critiquing those roles, NOT supporting them. And he did it poorly and admitted it.

But why did he think those were "traditional gender roles" in the first place? Men raping a 12 year-old girl?! Women fantasizing about gang rape? To me that's a hell of a lot creepier than a defense attorney doing her job.

Did you read bodice-rippers from the 70s and 80s? I read a lot of them, they are fortunately out of style now.

Can you answer the question? Why did Bernie think those were traditional gender roles?

NP here. You do understand that she was the defendant's lawyer, right? So she had a duty to represent him and follow the law, even if the law at the time was unfair to rape victims. It's fine if you don't like Clinton, but it's pretty weak to cite this as evidence of how she's a horrible person.
