Are your parents still driving? How old are they?

My mother is 75 and drives. She does understand her growing limitations and adjusts accordingly. She hasn't driven at night for a couple of years because of cataracts. She drives more slowly. She doesn't drive in bad weather.

What you've described is typical of the people in our family as well.

I think that by 75 (if not 70) there should be yearly road tests. It's never going to happen because it would take way too much bureaucracy and money (for testers.) My dad lost his license at about 78. We were shocked - we thought he was fine for local driving but the doctors were very helpful in explaining that it's not really about vision or stamina - it's about being able to do complex multitasking among moving objects.

There are a lot of people on the road who really shouldn't be - they're just as dangerous driving locally as they would be on the highway.

Equally concerning to me are those driving under the influence of drugs, alcohol, and lack of sleep.

For those who act like anything over 70 is old and driving should be limited - what is one supposed to do after that age? Curl up and die? My parents still do their own yard work because they enjoy it. My father just bought himself a new power washer yesterday. In comparison my IL's are closer to 70 and they act and look older than my parents. It's really about the individual and their condition.

No. They should just be tested instead of auto-renewing.

Do you think Bernie, Hillary, and Donald should be able to run for the presidency without taking a test but should be tested to drive?

What? Why did you post twice? This has nothing to do with politics. ANY elderly person driving should be tested. Relying on an exam they took 60 years ago is nonsense given how many elderly people lose their sight, reflexes, etc.

What age do you consider "elderly" and in need of a test?

I suppose it's debatable but I would say 65-70+. At 65 you are "aged" per government standards, so it makes sense to use that number. I honestly don't see the big issue. I really think they should make EVERYONE periodically retake a road test. There are some BAD drivers out there. Curious, what is your protest in having an elderly person retake the test (and be allowed to continue driving if they pass?) I don't think it is in dispute that your reflexes decrease as you age, not to mention, in many cases, your ability to move. As it stands, it is up to a person to recognize they can't drive (rare) or their kids to fight them on it (bad situation.) Making the DMV the bad guy is a win/win.

I'm not opposed to it after 75 and think it's often needed. I disagree that 65 is elderly; and I find it humorous that anyone could view active, healthy people like Hillary, Bernie, and Donald as elderly.

I don't think 65 is elderly but for SSA/Medicare/Medicaid purposes it is, so it would be logical to use that age. I agree 75 is probably better. I feel there are very few people who are 80+ and good drivers.

I feel safer riding with my 80 year old father than I would with most teen/early 20's drivers. Dad doesn't text while driving, eat while driving, put on makeup, or drive like he's invincible.

My parents both drive (and work) and are 70. I think since they both work, it would be difficult to take away their DL's. My Dad still performs pretty high precision medical procedures, so hopefully he has the dexterity to drive! My mom is a bad driver, but it has nothing to do with her age

Yes. They are 69 and 67 years old.

My 91 (92 in April) year old grandfather still drives.

I realize it is off topic, but I doubt that Hilary, Bernie or the Donald drive themselves anywhere.

No one has stated or pretended that people don't deteriorate as they age.

Mom is 68 and Dad is 72, both still driving. He's fine, but she's always been a lousy driver and has only gotten worse. I won't let her drive our kids.

My dad is 91 and still drives. He had cataract surgery a few years ago and they corrected his vision to 20/20! He drives well-known routes and usually short distances. Ever so often, I have him drive me somewhere so I can keep tabs on whether he is able to do so safely. He doesn't drive at night.

good god please stop driving after 75, it should be the law.

My dad is 87. Still drives. I have ridden with him and he is still fine.
My mom stopped driving at 81 when she was diagnosed with dementia. Doctors orders. Of course I had sent the doctor a long letter outlining my concerns beforehand and he agreed with them and voila! No more driving. That made me the Evil Daughter but I don't care, I got her off the road

You do realize that many people at that age are in good health and can still work, go to the gym, dance, date, drive, etc.?
