My employer is putting me up in a hotel so I dont have to drive but i still wont see my wife and 3yo for 3 days, all thanks to the blizzard.
Suck it up.

I am not a nurse, an EMT, a cop, or anything important.... you are lucky you have a hotel and I'm sorry you won't see your family but at least you WILL BE SAFE IN A HOTEL OR AT YOUR WORKPLACE.

Your wife is going to be stuck alone with a 3 year old for 3 days? You are a terrible husband and father.

For pete's sake, my husband is traveling. He left the day of the blizzard knowing that it was coming and that he wouldn't make it back on Saturday as planned. He's bummed and I am too. I'll manage despite having a 3 year old and an older child. My husband is not terrible, nor is PP.

OP is in a tough spot. So sorry that I don't have any words of wisdom to add here. Just stay safe. Good luck to you!

Your kids will stay in the hotel?

WHy did you ask? When you ask you give people the opportunity to tell you no. You should have just informed them via writing as someone said earlier and moved on.

OP, however this turns out, you need a new job! What type of work do you do? ie. bookkeeping, sales, marketing, etc.? We have a couple of openings at my office - which already told everyone to telework, starting last night!

OP,

This is one of those times when making a decision means weighing known (OPM shuts at 12 + state of emergency) and unknown factors (speed of incoming snow).

The equation is simple. If you know how to drive in a few inches of snow, you can calculate at what time you should leave so as to be home by 3pm, which is the official start of the blizzard - except that predictions are now for an earlier start. Allow for a longer drive, since it will be in snow.

The way you act will affect the way you are perceived, so stay professional, speak or write clearly and don't "ask". You will "Let them know". That's for the bosses who respect people who stand up for themselves, politely and rationally.

Or, if your office is set up to accommodate a discreet disappearance without telling anyone, and you think your bosses would prefer a "don't tell" approach, you can do that too.

NP here, the PP is terrible because they don't get the difference between being in one place when the snow is falling vs commuting on the roads. And because their work situation is what it is they feel entitled to tell everyone to suck it up, even when they wouldn't be 'sucking up' the same thing as them. It's obnoxious.

What an ass you are. The twelve hour shifts with employers making sleep and food arrangements for staff are common in healthcare. Who do you expect to care for all of the people in hospitals, nursing homes and institutions? Who do you expect to put out fires and report to scenes of emergency? Only those without 3 year olds?

My wife is also leaving later today I won't see her before Monday or Tuesday. I will be home alone with my three kids. I am very proud of her work and will be absolutely fine for the time she must be gone. I feel for her though because it's exhausting to be at work that long.

Since we are in DC odds are very strong that her bosses are liberals, and not even remotely conservative or republicans.

Actually your husband is at the very least being selfish. He won't change his travel plans but will leave you in a blizzard with two young kids. Sounds like a sweetheart.

Not necessarily. My wife works for the House Clerk's office and they do not follow OPM rules. House Clerk employees are scheduled to stay today for regular hours (6 PM). The House Clerk is appointed by the Republican House Speaker.

I do not drive home. Metro and bus. Buses are stopping.

That's bs. Metro and the buses won't be running. So if they are at the house building at 6 pm they may be there all weekend. I am guessing a man is the one making them stay until 6. Men never can plan for things like this. They don't get it.

The House Clerk is Karen Haas. She is a woman.

A manager was complaining that one of the supervisors encouraged staffers who ordinarily don't have flexibility to work from home today if they chose. NOTHING we do is essential or even in the same universe as essential, and all the senior people have flexibility and are going to be nowhere near the office. Luckily the VP ignored the complainer and went on to issue the same guidance to ALL staffers. A little human decency goes a long way.

OP, who's in charge today if your bosses are out of the office? Can you appeal to their sense of reason.

I saw this yesterday, too. Someone mentioned in passing that "Oh, so-and-so is already telling our staff that they can/should plan to work from home on Friday." A line manager overheard and moaned and groaned, clearly pissed that THEIR boss made everyone's safety a priority over getting work done (again, non essential... we're not cops, firefighters, medical).
My opinion of this line manager will never be the same.

OP what do you do? I agree you need to get it in writing, they may be less willing to do that.
