People are jerks. Our nonprofit is open today. A manager was complaining that one of the supervisors encouraged staffers who ordinarily don't have flexibility to work from home today if they chose. NOTHING we do is essential or even in the same universe as essential, and all the senior people have flexibility and are going to be nowhere near the office. Luckily the VP ignored the complainer and went on to issue the same guidance to ALL staffers. A little human decency goes a long way. OP, who's in charge today if your bosses are out of the office? Can you appeal to their sense of reason.
I saw this yesterday, too. Someone mentioned in passing that "Oh, so-and-so is already telling our staff that they can/should plan to work from home on Friday." A line manager overheard and moaned and groaned, clearly pissed that THEIR boss made everyone's safety a priority over getting work done (again, non essential... we're not cops, firefighters, medical). My opinion of this line manager will never be the same.
