Van Morrison fans - the Man's best song?

Beside you. Live version from Astral Weeks. Amazing!

I don't like his big hits like Brown-Eyed Girl (despite being one) and Moondance. But Astral Weeks and Tupelo Honey (and many others) made me a convert.

Sweet Thing-- Pure magic.

It's funny, most people who love him don't really like "Brown Eyed Girl." Morrison himself said, "I've got about 300 songs that I think are better."

+1

The song was originally "Brown Skinned Girl" - changed for acceptable radio airplay.

Me too! This is the first one that came to mind. For reasons very similar to yours.

NP here and I love this song, too. Also "Bright Side of the Road" and "Jackie Wilson Said."

Exactly. Like saying Bruce Springsteen's best song was Born to Run. No real fan would ever say this.

No one has mentioned my favorite: Jackie Wilson Said.

Also love Into the Mystic and his cover of With a Little Help From My Friends.

Oops, sorry, didn't see that someone else loves Jackie Wilson too!

Anonymous wrote:Great topic!! The whole album Astral Weeks is magnificent. I vividly remember my boyfriend giving it to me in high school and being mesmerized by it. I would put it in my top 10 records of all time. I love the first lines of Astral Weeks: "If I ventured in the slipstream, between the viaducts of your dream, where immobile steel rims crack, and the ditch in the back roads stop. Could you find me? Would you kiss my eyes? To lay me down in silence, easy. To be born again." Pure poetry.

Astral Weeks is what turned me into a proselytizer not just a fan. I'd heard the Moondance album plenty of time and songs like Into the Mystic and And It Stoned Me had definitely left an impression. But when I hear that first line in Astral Weeks I was hooked. Hearing the remainder of the album and the power yet free form poetry of songs like Cypress Avenue and Madame George just sent me into another level of awe.

There are some killer live performances in YouTube, FYI.

I have huge regrets for not seeing him do Astral Weeks live when he toured a few years ago!

Don't regret it -- the show was terrible. I was so excited about seeing him I was in tears, but it was so bad I almost left. He was unintelligible, rude, probably drunk. So, so disappointing.

I love Why Must I Always Explain and most other songs on Hymns To The Silence. Also Someone Like You.

My friend once said "Its like God touched Van Morrison on the head and said "Sing."

Sweet Thing.

Though I also have mad love for Domino. And Caravan.

Astral weeks.

And find the live Van Morrison / Pink Floyd version of "Comfortably Numb" (it's on the soundtrack to The Departed).
