I would put it in my top 10 records of all time. I love the first lines of Astral Weeks: "If I ventured in the slipstream, between the viaducts of your dream, where immobile steel rims crack, and the ditch in the back roads stop. Could you find me? Would you kiss my eyes? To lay me down in silence, easy. To be born again." Pure poetry.
Astral Weeks is what turned me into a proselytizer not just a fan. I'd heard the Moondance album plenty of time and songs like Into the Mystic and And It Stoned Me had definitely left an impression. But when I hear that first line in Astral Weeks I was hooked. Hearing the remainder of the album and the power yet free form poetry of songs like Cypress Avenue and Madame George just sent me into another level of awe.
There are some killer live performances in YouTube, FYI.
